Sweater in Stylecraft Special Aran – Pattern 9075

Pattern 9075 from Stylecraft is a knitted sweater design worked in Special Aran weight yarn. This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF, making it ideal for knitters who are comfortable with cables and rib techniques and are ready to tackle a more structured, textured garment. The sweater is sized to fit a chest/bust measurement of 71/76 cm to 112/117 cm (28/30 in to 44/46 in), with actual garment measurements ranging from 91 cm to 133 cm (36 in to 52½ in), offering a comfortable, relaxed fit across five sizes.

About the Garment

This is a classic pullover sweater featuring a bold, structured cable panel as the centrepiece of the design. The cable panel runs vertically up the front of the garment and is flanked by stocking stitch sections on either side, creating a clean, elegant contrast between the textured cables and the smooth knitted fabric. The sweater has set-in or drop-shoulder style construction with ribbed welts and cuffs for a neat, traditional finish.

  • Full length: 53–62 cm (21–24½ in) depending on size
  • Sleeve length: 42–48 cm (16½–19 in) depending on size
  • Five sizes available to suit a wide range of body measurements

Cable Panel Detail

The Cable Panel is 56 stitches wide and forms the visual highlight of this sweater. It is an 8-row repeat pattern that combines multiple cable crossings of varying widths, creating a rich, interlocking rope-and-twist effect typical of traditional Aran knitwear. The panel includes the following cable movements worked across its 8-row repeat:

  • C8B and C8F – large 8-stitch cable crossings worked to the back and front, creating bold rope cables on the outer edges of the panel
  • C4B and C4F – 4-stitch cable crossings worked to the back and front, forming smaller travelling cables and diamond-like motifs within the panel
  • Purl columns (P2) – used to separate and define individual cable elements, a hallmark of classic Aran construction
  • Plain knit sections (K4, K6, K8, K12) – worked between crossings to allow the cables to travel and create movement across the panel

The alternating right-side and wrong-side rows of the cable panel are carefully structured so that wrong-side rows are worked as knit over purl columns and purl over knit sections, maintaining the raised texture of the cables throughout. This 8-row repeat is continuous, building up a deeply textured fabric that is characteristic of Aran-style knitwear.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This pattern draws on a range of classic knitting stitches and construction techniques suitable for an intermediate knitter:

  • 2x2 Rib – used for the welts and cuffs, worked over a 2-row repeat of K2, P2 sequences; provides elasticity and a tidy, professional edge
  • Stocking Stitch – the background fabric flanking the cable panel on the front and back of the sweater
  • Cable crossings – C4B, C4F, C8B, C8F; all worked using a cable needle to hold stitches at the front or back of the work while others are knitted
  • Thumb method cast-on – specified for casting on at the beginning of the front piece
  • Shaping decreases and increases – used for armhole and sleeve shaping
  • Stitch holders – used to hold stitches during neckline construction

Construction Method

The sweater is worked in separate flat pieces — front, back, and sleeves — which are then seamed together. Each piece begins with a ribbed welt worked on smaller needles before switching to the larger needles for the main body. The front piece positions the 56-stitch cable panel centrally, with stocking stitch worked on either side. Stit
