The pattern includes directions for a size S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL with a chest width of 110, 117, 126, 132, 141 and 148 centimeters and a length of 65, 68, 70, 72, 75 and 77 centimeters. Size small pictured in yarn from Sandnes.

The pattern is written for a knitter who is able to follow charts as well as written instructions, make increases and decreases, pick up stitches and work in 2-color stranded knitting in the round as well as back and forth. (Directions is a combination of charts and written text).

Svend Knitted Sweater by HelstrupDesign

What Is Being Made

Svend is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed by HelstrupDesign, available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL. This pullover-style jumper features a classic construction with finished chest widths from 110 centimeters (size S) to 148 centimeters (size XXXL), and lengths ranging from 65 to 77 centimeters depending on the chosen size. The design incorporates colorwork elements, utilizing both a main color and a contrasting color yarn to create visual interest and pattern definition throughout the garment.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Svend is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which allows for seamless or minimal-seam construction typical of modern sweater design. The pattern employs a two-color knitting approach, combining a primary yarn color with a contrasting color to build the sweater's visual pattern. The ribbed sections—typically found at the cuffs, hem, and neckline—are worked on smaller needles to create the characteristic elasticity and fitted finish that defines quality knitwear. The body and sleeves are worked on larger needles to establish the main gauge and fabric structure.

This advanced-level project requires knitters to manage multiple techniques simultaneously: maintaining consistent gauge across color changes, managing two yarn colors in colorwork sections, and executing the transition between ribbed and stockinette sections. The use of circular needles in multiple lengths accommodates different construction stages, from the main body worked on longer needles to the sleeve caps and neckline worked on shorter needles or double-pointed needles.

Stitches Used

The Svend sweater utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured pattern. Ribbing appears in the cuffs, hem, and neckline, creating elastic, fitted edges that hold the sweater close to the body. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, the most common knit stitch that produces a smooth, flat surface ideal for displaying colorwork patterns. The colorwork sections employ stranded knitting (also called Fair Isle knitting), where two colors are carried across the row and floated behind the stitches to create the pattern design. This technique requires careful tension management to ensure the floats remain elastic and the fabric maintains consistent gauge.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Svend is designed for aran-weight yarn, a medium-heavy yarn that knits at approximately 90 meters per 50 grams. The pattern recommends wool or wool-blend yarns with excellent stitch definition and elasticity. Specific yarn suggestions include Jamieson's Shetland Heather, Per Gynt from Sandnes, or Mor Aase from Sandnes—all traditional choices known for their durability and suitability for colorwork projects.

Yarn quantities vary by size:

  • Size S: 450-500 grams main color, 250-300 grams contrast color
  • Size M: 500-550 grams main color, 300-350 grams contrast color
  • Size L: 550-600 grams main color, 300-350 grams contrast color
  • Size XL: 650-700 grams main color, 350-400 grams contrast color
  • Size XXL: 750-800 grams main color, 350-400 grams contrast color
  • Size XXXL: 800-850 grams main color, 400-450 grams contrast color

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for 3½ mm circular needles in two lengths—60 or 80 centimeters for the main body and 40 centimeters for the sleeves and neckline. 3 mm circular needles in matching lengths are used for the ribbed sections, which require a smaller needle size to achieve the necessary gauge and elasticity. Knitters may substitute 3 mm and 3½ mm double-pointed needles for the smaller circular needles if preferred, particularly when working the sleeve caps or neckline in the round.

Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming any necessary sections. The pattern emphasizes that individual gauge varies among knitters, making it critical to swatch and adjust needle sizes as needed to match the specified gauge before beginning the project.
