Product Description
This pattern can be found for free online at JessieAtHome dot com/pattern/super-simple-knit-shawl/
This super simple knit shawl is exactly that – simple! It’s great for a first big project. The only stitches used are knit, purl, and yarn over; so, if you can make those and cast on and bind off, you’re set. This shawl is also a great way to use small amounts of coordinating yarn. I used size 2 (sport weight) yarn, but you can use another weight if that’s what you have. Make yours whatever size you want, just bind off when you’re happy. Have fun and happy stitching.
Super Simple Shawl by Jessie Rayot
What Is Being Made
The Super Simple Shawl is a beginner-friendly triangular shawl designed by Jessie Rayot. This downloadable knit pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 64 inches by 32 inches, making it an ideal size for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a lightweight wrap. The design is perfect for knitters new to shawl construction who want to create a beautiful, wearable garment without complex techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This shawl pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction utilizes basic increases and decreases to shape the triangular silhouette. Yarn overs are incorporated throughout the pattern to create decorative openwork details while simultaneously increasing stitches at regular intervals. The straightforward stitch pattern allows new knitters to build confidence while producing an elegant finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) - The primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Purl (p) - Used to create texture and pattern variation
- Yarn Over (yo) - Creates decorative eyelets and lace details while increasing stitches
Yarn and Materials
The Super Simple Shawl pattern accommodates multiple yarn options within the DK weight category. The sample shown uses a combination approach: the pattern originally calls for Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in sport weight (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, hand dyed), requiring 274 yards. The alternate sample version uses 500 yards total of various DK weight yarns, specifically combining eight different yarns from Cat Mountain Fiber Arts Fusion Cobalt at approximately 62.5 yards each.
Knitters should select DK weight yarn (Size 3) totaling approximately 500 yards, or substitute with the sport weight option if using the original yarn specification. The 100% wool composition provides warmth and drape suitable for a shoulder shawl.
Needles and Gauge
This pattern requires 5.0 mm needles (US size 8). The gauge is 17 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in Stockinette Stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions of 64 inches by 32 inches.
Additional Supplies
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and increases
