What Is Being Made

The Super Chunky Scarflette is a modern yet vintage-inspired neck warmer, also known as a bow tie or keyhole scarf. This compact cowl-style accessory is designed to be completed in approximately two hours, making it an ideal quick-knit project. The finished scarflette measures approximately 17cm in width and 82cm in length, providing a versatile piece that drapes elegantly around the neck.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project suitable for beginners, utilizing fundamental knitting techniques that are accessible to crafters new to the hobby. The pattern employs a combination of increase and decrease shaping to create the distinctive scarflette silhouette, progressing from a narrow cast-on through strategic stitch increases, a stockinette stitch body section, and then decreasing back down before finishing with ribbed edging.

Stitches Used

• Knit stitch (K) – the foundational stitch forming the main fabric
• Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches for textured sections
• 1x1 rib – alternating knit and purl stitches across rows, creating an elastic, textured finish at the edges
• Knit front and back (Kfb) – an increase technique that creates one additional stitch by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
• Knit two together (K2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one
• Stockinette stitch – created by alternating knit and purl rows, forming the smooth main body of the scarflette

Materials

This pattern requires 12mm knitting needles and approximately 100g of super chunky yarn. The pattern photo was created using Rico Super Super Chunky yarn, demonstrating the weight and texture achievable with this yarn category. Additional materials include scissors and a needle for sewing up the finished piece. The gauge is worked over 5cm in stockinette stitch on 12mm needles, measuring 5 stitches and 5 rows, which ensures proper fit and drape of the completed scarflette.

Pattern Structure

The scarflette begins with a cast-on of 6 stitches and progresses through a series of increase rows using the knit front and back technique, building up to 14 stitches. After 10 rows of stockinette stitch, the pattern incorporates a decrease row using knit two together decreases, returning to 8 stitches. The piece then transitions into 8 rows of 1x1 ribbing, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. The pattern concludes with another increase section, demonstrating the symmetrical shaping characteristic of this scarflette design.
