What is Being Made
The Sunrise Cafetiere Cosy is a knitted insulating cover designed to fit a standard 1-litre cafetiere (French press). This functional accessory measures 16cm (6½ inches) tall by 31.5cm (12½ inches) around when unstretched, with the option to steam-block to approximately 17cm (7 inches) in width. The cosy features an adjustable button tab, allowing it to be customized for a secure fit around various cafetiere sizes. The design is particularly practical for coffee enthusiasts, as a dark colour yarn is recommended to conceal potential coffee stains that may occur during regular use.
Techniques and Construction
The Sunrise Cafetiere Cosy employs a strategic combination of rib and cable construction methods to maximize insulation. The rib and cable structure traps air pockets within the fabric, providing excellent thermal properties to keep beverages hot for extended periods. This design makes it an ideal introductory cable project for knitters progressing beyond basic techniques.
The pattern cleverly balances true cable stitches with easier eyelet-rib sections that create a visual cable-like appearance without requiring advanced cable manipulation. This mixed approach makes the project accessible to intermediate knitters while still offering the satisfaction of working with traditional cable techniques. The inclusion of button tabs adds both functional adjustability and design interest to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Cable stitches – traditional twisted stitch patterns that form the primary decorative and structural elements
- Eyelet-rib – a combination technique that mimics the appearance of cables while remaining simpler to execute, ideal for building confidence with cable work
- Ribbing – provides elasticity and helps the cosy conform snugly to the cafetiere shape
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino yarn, with 125 metres (137 yards) per 50g (2oz) ball. Two balls of yarn are required to complete the project; Forest is the recommended colourway, though yarn of similar weight and yardage can be substituted. The yarn weight is classified as 4-ply or sport weight, providing a refined fabric suitable for close-fitting garments.
Essential tools include 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the main knitting, a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The pattern also requires three buttons approximately 14mm (½ inch) in diameter for the adjustable tab closure.
Difficulty Level
The Sunrise Cafetiere Cosy is rated as an advanced beginner to intermediate project. While it introduces cable techniques, the mixed approach of true cables and simpler eyelet-rib sections makes it an excellent stepping stone for knitters new to cable work. Experienced intermediate knitters will find this a straightforward and rewarding knit that combines functional design with accessible technique development.
