Product Description
Sunny Cardigan is a light summer cardigan with an all-over lace pattern, perfect for throwing over your favourite summer dress or a jumpsuit. It has a seamless, top-down construction, with short rows used to raise the back of the neck, and yoke increases incorporated in the stitch pattern. You can make it any length, from a shrug to a full length cardigan. The lace stitch pattern (Ostrich Plumes) is easier to knit than it looks - you only work the lace pattern on every 4th row, the remaining rows are plain stockinette stitch.
This garment requires careful blocking. Use yarn that blocks well (100% wool will work best).

What is Being Made
The Sunny Cardigan is a light summer cardigan designed for adult wearers, featuring an all-over lace pattern ideal for layering over summer dresses or jumpsuits. This versatile garment offers flexible length options, ranging from a shrug style to a full-length cardigan, allowing knitters to customize the finished piece according to personal preference and styling needs.
Construction Method
The Sunny Cardigan employs a seamless, top-down construction technique, which allows knitters to try on the garment as they work and adjust the length to their specifications. Short rows are strategically used to raise the back of the neck, providing a comfortable and well-fitted neckline. Yoke increases are incorporated directly into the stitch pattern itself, creating a cohesive design where shaping and pattern work together seamlessly.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern featured in the Sunny Cardigan is the Ostrich Plumes lace stitch. This lace pattern is designed to be more approachable than it initially appears—the lace motifs are worked only on every 4th row, while the remaining rows consist of plain stockinette stitch. This strategic placement of pattern rows makes the lace accessible to intermediate-level knitters while still creating an elegant, intricate appearance throughout the garment.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Sunny Cardigan is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight fabric suitable for warm-weather wear. The pattern recommends using yarn that blocks well, with 100% wool being identified as the optimal fiber choice for achieving the best results. Proper blocking is essential for this garment, as it helps set the lace pattern and ensures the cardigan drapes beautifully.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Sunny Cardigan is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace patterns and top-down construction techniques. The simplified lace pattern—worked only every 4th row—makes this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skills without overwhelming complexity.
