Summer Night Kimono Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

The Summer Night Kimono is a lightweight, open-front cardigan-style garment designed by Izabela Firlová. This crochet pattern creates a kimono worked in a single piece from the bottom to the top, with sleeves added after the main body is complete. The design offers multiple size options ranging from XS to XXL, with width measurements from 127 cm (50 inches) to 190 cm (75 inches), making it a versatile piece suitable for various body types.

Construction and Techniques

The Summer Night Kimono is constructed using a bottom-up building method, meaning you begin crocheting from the lower edge and work upward toward the neckline. The entire garment body is worked as one continuous piece before sleeves are attached, which streamlines the construction process and creates seamless integration of the main sections. This technique is particularly effective for creating flowing, draped garments like kimonos. The pattern requires turning after every row to maintain proper stitch orientation and fabric structure.

The foundation of the pattern uses chain multiples of 24 plus 5 stitches to establish the width. For the suggested Size S (the featured size), this equals 140 cm in width. The pattern incorporates strategic spacing and stitch placement to create an open, airy fabric that allows for breathability—ideal for a summer garment.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the base chain and spacing throughout the pattern
  • Single crochet (sc) – A fundamental stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
  • Double crochet (dc) – Used extensively to build the main fabric structure and create height in rows
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) – A taller stitch that adds vertical dimension to the design
  • Triple treble crochet (trtr) – An even taller stitch used for creating dramatic drape and openwork sections
  • Slip stitch (ss) – Used for joining rounds and securing stitches without adding height

The pattern uses a repeating section marked by asterisks (**) to indicate which portions should be repeated across rows, making the instructions easier to follow and reducing the need to write out every single stitch.

Materials and Specifications

The Summer Night Kimono pattern calls for 1080 meters of yarn total, distributed across 7 balls. The recommended yarn is Etrofil organic cotton in fingering weight, which is classified as 4-ply yarn. Organic cotton is an excellent choice for summer garments due to its breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and natural comfort against the skin. Fingering weight yarn creates a delicate, lightweight fabric perfect for warm-weather wear.

The pattern specifies a 3.5 mm crochet hook as the recommended tool size. The gauge is established at 4 inches (approximately 10 cm) containing 20 stitches and 10 rows, which helps ensure proper sizing and drape of the finished garment. Maintaining accurate gauge is essential when working with sizing options to achieve the correct finished dimensions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex stitch combinations and garment construction. The use of multiple stitch heights (from double crochet to triple treble crochet) and the single-piece construction method require solid foundational skills and the ability to follow detailed row-by-row instructions.

Size Options

The pattern provides six size options to accommodate different measurements:

  • XS – 127 cm width (50 inches)
  • S – 140 cm width (55 inches)
  • M – 153 cm width (60 inches)
  • L – 165 cm width (65 inches)
  • XL – 178 cm width (70 inches)
  • XXL – 190 cm width (75 inches)

Each size uses the same chain multiple formula (multiples of 24) adjusted for the desired finished width, allowing crocheters to customize the garment to their specific needs.
