Summer Days Mandala by Little Duck Crochet
Project Overview
The Summer Days Mandala is an intermediate-level crochet decoration designed by Little Duck Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a circular mandala measuring approximately 10 inches in diameter, making it an ideal decorative piece for home styling, seasonal displays, or gifting. The project showcases mandala construction techniques using colorwork and textured stitches to achieve visual depth and dimension.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a flat, circular mandala decoration suitable for wall displays, framing, or use as a decorative accent piece. The mandala's geometric design emphasizes radial symmetry and layered construction, creating an intricate finished piece that combines multiple crochet techniques into one cohesive decorative object.
Materials Required
The Summer Days Mandala is worked using Three Bears Yarn Affection Aran Cotton in various colors, paired with a 4.5mm crochet hook. A yarn needle is needed to weave in ends upon completion. The aran weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition, allowing the textured stitches and color changes to display clearly in the finished mandala.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
- Chain Stitch (CH) – The foundation stitch used to create base chains and joining chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC, UK DC) – A fundamental short stitch used for structure and joining rounds
- Double Crochet (DC, UK TR) – A medium-height stitch providing the primary fabric of the mandala
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC, UK FDTC) – An advanced textured stitch worked around the post of stitches from previous rows. This technique involves yarning over, inserting the hook through the work and underneath the target stitch, then back through the work to position the hook at the front. The stitch is completed by yarning over and pulling through, then working off loops in sequence. This stitch creates raised, dimensional effects ideal for mandala patterns
- Spike Double Crochet (Spike DC, UK Spike TR) – A decorative stitch variation worked into rows below the current working row rather than into the top loops of the adjacent stitch. This technique involves yarning over, inserting the hook into the lower row, pulling through, and completing the double crochet as normal. Spike stitches add visual interest and create dramatic color effects in mandala designs
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals including chain, single crochet, and double crochet stitches. The inclusion of post stitches and spike stitches requires intermediate-level understanding of stitch placement and hook positioning. Crocheters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following round-by-round instructions, as mandalas typically involve working in continuous rounds with color changes.
Pattern Format and Instructions
This is a downloadable PDF pattern with all instructions provided in U.S. crochet terminology. The format allows for easy printing and reference while working, making it convenient for crafters who prefer physical pattern copies alongside their project.
