Product Description
This half circle shawl is knit solely in garter stitch and features the Sea Foam lace pattern. This pattern shows off wonderfully variegated and self striping yarns with long to medium lengths of color. Sea Foam lace uses multiple yarn overs which are dropped on the following row. This, combined with the all-over garter stitch, gives an airy, textured, reversible fabric.
While the sample of the Stormy Seas shawl was knit in a handspun yarn, it can of course also be knit with a commercial yarn. For a similar result, use fingering or sport weight yarn. It can be made as small or large as you like, just knit until your yarn runs out. The Sea Foam lace pattern is both charted and written out.

Project Overview
The Stormy Seas Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for a half-circle shawl designed by Susanne Visch. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a sophisticated lace design suitable for knitters with some experience seeking a moderately challenging project.
Construction and Techniques
This half-circle shawl employs a thoughtful construction method that combines simplicity with visual interest. After completing set-up rows, the shawl is worked in four distinct lace tiers, with each tier concluding in an increase row to shape the half-circle form. The pattern includes 2 border stitches positioned on each side of the work to frame the design and provide finished edges.
The shawl is finished using the Russian bind-off technique, which creates a secure and professional edge suitable for lace projects. Stitch markers can be incorporated between pattern repeats to help track progress, though their specific placement is left flexible to accommodate variations between the individual lace tiers.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is garter stitch, created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch provides a textured, reversible fabric that serves as the foundation for the shawl's structure. The lace elements are integrated into the four-tier construction, with each tier building upon the previous one through strategic increases.
Knitters should slip stitch markers as they encounter them during knitting to maintain pattern continuity without disrupting the rhythm of the work.
Yarn and Materials
The sample shawl featured in the pattern was created using hand-spun thick 'n thin singles yarn from the Diva Dosis Spin Club September 2011 collection in the colorway Doctor, spun by Dutch Wool Diva. This yarn measured approximately 12 wraps per inch (wpi), classifying it as a sport weight yarn.
For the sample shawl, a total of 540 meters (590 yards) of yarn weighing 158 grams was required. Knitters working with commercial yarns should plan for 420 to 630 meters (460 to 690 yards) of fingering or sport weight yarn to achieve similar results. Those desiring a larger finished shawl can substitute a heavier yarn weight and use appropriately larger needles to scale up the project.
Finished Dimensions
The completed shawl is approximately 540 meters in circumference when worked with the recommended yarn weight and needle size, creating a substantial half-circle garment suitable for layering or wrapping.
