What is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted toy project designed by Andrew Lucas. The finished piece is a small stuffed toy measuring approximately 15 centimeters in height. The toy features a structured body and head, created using fundamental knitting techniques and finished with simple stuffing to give it dimension and form.

Techniques Used

The Stitch Orange toy employs several essential knitting techniques suitable for beginners:

• Casting on: The foundation row is created by casting on 25 stitches to begin the body section
• Increasing stitches: Increases are worked in every stitch across a row to expand the fabric from 25 stitches to 50 stitches for the body, and again for the head shaping
• Decreasing stitches: Decreases are performed using the knit two together (k2tog) method to shape the shoulders and head, gradually reducing stitch counts to create a tapered form
• Stocking stitch: The primary fabric structure alternates between knit and purl rows to create a smooth, finished appearance on the right side
• Garter stitch: Knit rows create texture and structure where needed
• Binding off: The finishing technique involves threading the yarn end through remaining stitches using a tapestry needle, drawing up the stitches, and tying off securely
• Stuffing: The completed knitted pieces are filled with stuffing material to create a three-dimensional toy

Stitches Used

This project uses fundamental knitting stitches that make it accessible to beginners:

• Knit stitch (k): The basic stitch used throughout the project
• Purl stitch (p): Combined with knit stitches to create stocking stitch fabric
• Stocking stitch (st st): Alternating rows of knit and purl create the primary fabric texture, worked over 21 rows for the body and 17 rows for the head
• Garter stitch (gs): Continuous knit rows create additional texture
• Increase (inc): Used to expand the fabric for shaping
• Knit two together (k2tog): The primary decrease method used to shape shoulders and head
• Purl two together (p2tog): Decreases worked on purl rows for shaping

Materials

The Stitch Orange toy requires minimal materials, making it an economical beginner project:

• Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
• Yarn: Double knitting weight wool in multiple colors—blue, light blue, navy blue, pink, black, and white. The pattern uses oddments (small leftover amounts) of these colors, allowing crafters to use yarn scraps from their stash
• Stuffing: A small amount of toy stuffing material to fill the completed knitted body and head
• Additional tools: A tapestry needle for threading yarn ends and binding off stitches

Project Structure

The toy is constructed in distinct sections. The body begins with 25 cast-on stitches that are increased in every stitch to create 50 stitches, then worked in stocking stitch for 21 rows. The shoulders are shaped by decreasing stitches using knit two together across the row, reducing back to 25 stitches. The head section begins with increases to expand to 37 stitches, then is worked in stocking stitch for 17 rows before being shaped with decreases to gradually reduce the stitch count, creating a tapered head form. The final stitches are drawn together and tied off to close the toy.
