Product Description

This shawl is perfect for beginners to shawl knitting, but also for those new to knitting with more than one colour too.

I’m also hoping to help knitters understand how triangular shawls develop with this very simple yet elegant shawl pattern.

The design for this shawl was inspired by my Fankle, Old Shale and Skoosh! shawls. After completing these three designs,I wanted to create a fourth shawl that would include a little colour work. The thought of knitting with more than one colour can be slightly daunting to most new knitters, but this is a straightforward striped pattern and is very easy to follow: the main body is worked in stocking stitch, changing the yarn colour after every second row. The shawl is then finished off with a little lace border.

What Is Being Made

The Stiallach Shawl is a triangular knit shawl designed as an accessible introduction to shawl knitting and multi-colour knitting techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 68 inches (173 cm) wide and 33 inches (84 cm) long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Design Inspiration and Pattern Development

Created by designer Amanda (Shuttermonkey), the Stiallach Shawl represents the fourth in a series of shawl designs following the Fankle, Old Shale, and Skoosh shawls. This pattern was specifically developed to introduce knitters to colour work while maintaining beginner-friendly construction. The designer emphasizes that the Stiallach Shawl serves an educational purpose, helping knitters understand how triangular shawls develop through simple yet elegant design principles.

Knitting Techniques Used

The shawl employs straightforward construction methods ideal for beginners exploring multi-colour knitting. The main body is worked entirely in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric. Colour changes occur every second row, creating a simple striped pattern that is easy to follow without complex colour work techniques. This approach removes the intimidation factor often associated with introducing multiple yarn colours to new knitters.

The shawl concludes with a lace border, adding delicate detailing and visual interest to the finished piece while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stocking stitch – forms the primary fabric of the shawl body
  • Lace stitches – create the decorative border finish
  • Striped colourwork – achieved through yarn colour changes every second row

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Stiallach Shawl is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates fabric with good drape and structure suitable for shawl construction. The pattern calls for two yarn colours:

  • Blue yarn – 433 metres (474 yards) in Artesano Aran, shade C864 Midday
  • Cream yarn – 271 metres (297 yards) in Artesano Aran

The use of aran weight yarn combined with the triangular shawl construction creates a garment with excellent drape and wearability. Knitters will require appropriate needles for aran weight yarn, typically in the range suitable for this yarn weight as specified in the complete pattern.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Rated as a beginner difficulty pattern, the Stiallach Shawl welcomes knitters new to shawl construction and those exploring colour work for the first time. The straightforward striped pattern and stocking stitch foundation make this an ideal stepping stone for developing fundamental knitting skills while creating a sophisticated finished garment.
