Product Description
Introducing STEPWISE shawl! The first in a series of stepwise patterns, STEPWISE shawl combines the simplicity of Sequence Knitting and the drama of Intarsia colorwork to produce a stunning color-block wrap.
Knit in a simple garter rib, STEPWISE shawl uses a main color (MC) throughout and a contrasting color (CC), which establishes the simple rib pattern. As the wrap grows, the MC continues to be worked throughout, while the the CC is replaced on by vertical stripes in 9 different colors! This new technique is so much fun to work and, as the new colors are added, it is wonderful to watch the graphic blocking develop!
YARN
Approx 1200 yds in MC, 400 yds CC and 100 yds in each of 9 additional colors of fingering weight yarn.
GAUGE 25 sts and 46 rows = 4”/10cm in Sequence Rib (blocked) While exact gauge is not critical, variation in gauge will alter final measurements and yardage used.
CONSTRUCTION Knit flat, from end-to-end.
Stepwise Shawl by VERSACIKNITS
Project Overview
The Stepwise Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by VERSACIKNITS that creates a sophisticated, colorwork-enhanced wrap. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 70 inches in length and 23 inches in width when blocked, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a rectangular shawl constructed using a stepwise approach that incorporates multiple colors throughout the design. The shawl is worked flat from end-to-end, allowing knitters to build the piece progressively with color changes integrated into the stitch pattern. The finished dimensions of 70" by 23" create a generous wrap that can be worn in multiple ways.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Stepwise Shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The primary construction method is flat knitting, which means stitches are worked back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round. The pattern incorporates color work as a central design element, with a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) plus nine additional colors (labeled A through I) strategically introduced throughout the piece. The color changes create visual interest and structure within the shawl's design.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Stepwise Shawl features Sequence Rib as its primary stitch pattern, which combines knit and purl stitches in a structured ribbed sequence. The pattern instructions indicate working sequences such as [k12, p12], meaning knitters alternate between knitting 12 stitches and purling 12 stitches to create the characteristic ribbed texture. This ribbed construction provides both visual texture and elasticity to the finished shawl, allowing it to drape elegantly while maintaining its shape.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Stepwise Shawl pattern calls for Magpie Fibers Domestic Fingering yarn, which is composed of 100% domestic super wash Merino wool. This yarn weight provides approximately 400 yards per 100-gram skein. The total yardage requirement is approximately 1,200 yards in the main color, 400 yards in the contrasting color, and 100 yards in each of the nine additional colors, totaling around 2,300 yards of fingering weight yarn for the complete project.
The pattern recommends specific Magpie Fibers colorways for visual reference: the main color (MC) is shown in Selkie, the contrasting color (CC) is Tenderness, and the nine additional colors are Velvet Underground, Amber Waves, Out of the Blue, Mesa, Norwegian Woods, 501's, Soiree, Drops of Jupiter, and Bell Bottom Blues. However, knitters may substitute any fingering weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber content.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern is worked on US Size 5 (3.75mm) needles in a 32-inch circular needle or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. The recommended gauge is 25 stitches and 46 rows over 4 inches in Sequence Rib. While exact gauge is not critical for this design, variations in gauge will affect the final measurements and total yardage used, so checking gauge before beginning is recommended for predictable results.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and have experience with simple color changes. The combination of ribbed stitch patterns and multiple color introductions requires attention to pattern instructions and comfort with managing multiple yarn colors, but the flat construction and straightforward stitch patterns keep the project accessible for advancing knitters.
