Product Description

With this easy pattern, you can make Staruman, a cute and curly sheep (ram). Don’t let his complicated look fool you because he is just as easy to make as most of my patterns. Crocheting the body and horns only takes a bit more time.

Size: 6 inch/ 15,5 cm sitting when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials: 3 colours of worsted weight yarn: dark brown (1/5 of a 100 yard skein), beige (1/3) and murky brown (1/8). You will also need fibrefill and pellets for extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). I strongly recommend using a fuzzy yarn because it gives the best result for both the eye patches and loop stitches.

Staruman the Ram Sheep Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Staruman is a crocheted amigurumi-style sheep toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished sheep doll measuring approximately 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) in height when sitting. The design is suitable for crafters seeking an intermediate-level crochet project that produces a charming stuffed animal with distinctive ram characteristics.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to construct the three-dimensional sheep form. The doll is worked in the round using continuous spiral rounds, which creates seamless cylindrical sections that form the body, head, and limbs. Crafters are encouraged to use a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it upward as new rounds commence. The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the construction process, with some color transitions highlighted in color-coded instructions for clarity. Color changes are executed by switching yarn colors in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as work continues.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While the pattern description does not enumerate every individual stitch type, the construction relies on standard American crochet terminology throughout. The spiral round technique is the primary construction method, allowing the crocheter to build the sheep's form without joining rounds. This approach creates a continuous fabric that naturally forms the three-dimensional structure of the toy. The pattern's intermediate difficulty level suggests the use of fundamental stitches combined in ways that require some crochet experience to execute successfully.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern recommends using Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which is specifically chosen for its fuzzy texture that enhances the sheep's woolly appearance. The yarn weight is aran, a medium-weight yarn that produces the intended finished size when crocheted at standard tension. The designer strongly recommends selecting a fuzzy or textured yarn rather than smooth yarn to achieve the authentic sheep aesthetic. Crochet hook size is not specified in the provided pattern excerpt, though standard hook sizing for aran-weight yarn typically ranges from 5.5 to 6 millimeters. The finished size of the sheep is dependent on both the yarn weight chosen and the individual crocheter's tension, making it useful to experiment with eye sizing recommendations despite the pattern's guidance.

Pattern Notes for Crafters

Before beginning this project, crafters should read through the entire pattern to familiarize themselves with the structure and instructions. The pattern uses standard American crochet terminology, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters familiar with this convention. Due to variations in yarn choice and individual crochet tension, the finished size may differ from the recommended 5.5 inches, and adjustments to details such as eye size may be necessary. The color-coded instructions for complex color changes enhance pattern readability and help prevent errors during construction.
