Product Description
The blue yarn with added sparkle made me think of night skies and the twinkle of stars and so this sock was born.
The sock is worked toe up with cable star patterning and a short row heel. Cables can be worked with or without a cable needle. On the leg, the star pattern moves with each repeat, allowing the stars to spiral up the leg.
With thanks to RosemaryKQ, MargiBorck and Purplebeary83 for test knitting.
Starry Socks by perfectcircle
What is Being Made
Starry Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Michelle Lincoln, available in three sizes to fit calf circumferences of 7, 8, or 9 inches. These are toe-up socks where the knitter determines the foot length, offering customization for different leg proportions. The socks feature decorative cabled stars as a central design element, combining both function and aesthetic appeal for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several specialized techniques to create its distinctive structure and appearance:
- Toe-up construction: The socks are knitted beginning at the toe and working upward toward the cuff, allowing the knitter to try on the sock during the process and customize the foot length precisely.
- Short row heel: A shaping technique that creates a fitted heel cup by working back and forth over a subset of stitches, then gradually incorporating all stitches back into the round.
- Cable work: Stitches are crossed over each other using a cable needle to create the raised star motifs that give these socks their distinctive visual character.
- Wrap and turn (w&t): A method used in short row shaping that prevents holes from forming when turning the work mid-row.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates fundamental and decorative stitches appropriate for sock knitting:
- Stocking stitch: The primary stitch used throughout, creating a smooth, classic fabric that forms the base of the sock.
- Make one right (m1R): An invisible increase worked by inserting the left needle from back to front under the strand between stitches and knitting through the front loop, used for shaping.
- Make one left (m1L): An invisible increase worked by inserting the left needle from front to back under the strand between stitches and knitting through the back loop, used for shaping.
- Slip stitch (sl): A stitch passed from one needle to another without being worked, used for various shaping and joining purposes.
- Cable crosses: Stitches crossed over each other to create the three-dimensional star patterns.
Materials and Tools
The Starry Socks pattern requires modest materials typical of sock knitting projects. Knitters will need 100 grams of 4ply yarn, which provides approximately 440 yards or 400 meters—sufficient yardage for a complete pair of socks in any of the three sizes. The recommended needle size is 2.25mm (US #1), which can be either double-pointed needles (dpns) or small circular needles, depending on the knitter's preferred method for working small circumference projects in the round. Additional tools include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds and a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable work. The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches and 13 rows per inch when worked in stocking stitch on 2.25mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size.
