Stan the Snowman Crochet Doll by Donna Wilkins
What is Being Made
Stan the Snowman is a small crochet doll designed by independent designer Donna Wilkins. This festive creature measures 6.5 inches tall, making it the perfect size for little hands. Stan is part of a collection of crochet creatures and serves as an ideal beginner-friendly amigurumi-style project for crafters looking to create soft, stuffed decorative dolls or toys.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds, meaning you do not join at the end of each round. This technique creates a seamless, spiral construction that is characteristic of amigurumi dolls. The doll is stuffed with toy stuffing to create a three-dimensional, soft form.
Embellishment techniques include embroidering details and attaching safety eyes (9mm) for facial features, though embroidered eyes can be substituted if preferred. Additional details such as the mouth, shoes, and buttons are created using black yarn, while the nose is worked using a stitch marker as a guide.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern, the project employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners. The continuous round construction method is ideal for creating the rounded, three-dimensional shapes needed for the snowman body, head, and accessories. This approach minimizes visible seams and creates a cohesive finished piece.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Hook: US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
Yarn: DK weight acrylic yarn is used throughout this project. The pattern specifies Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, though any DK weight yarn can be substituted. Total yardage requirements are as follows:
- 112 metres (40 grams) of Colour A in White for the main body
- Small amount of Colour B in Walnut for the arms
- Small amount of Colour C in Turquoise for the hat, buttons, and boots
- Small amount of Colour D in Lemon Grass for the hat and scarf
- Small amount of Colour E in Punchy Pink for the hat and scarf

Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is required for weaving in ends and assembling pieces. Safety eyes measuring 9mm are needed for facial features, with embroidered eyes offered as an alternative. Toy stuffing fills the doll to create its soft, plush texture.

Stan the Snowman is rated as a beginner difficulty project. The pattern does not require a specific gauge, making it forgiving for newer crocheters. This accessibility makes it an excellent choice for those new to amigurumi or doll-making techniques who want to create a charming festive decoration or gift.
