Product Description
This scarf will turn heads with its beautiful snowflake design! It can be made in the colors shown or any colors of worsted weight yarn you choose. The scarf is a lot easier to make than it looks, since only basic stitches are used! If you already know how to make a chain and a single crochet, as well as how to read and follow a crochet pattern, you’re ready to make this scarf!
The pattern is easy to follow and includes full instructions for making the scarf with the fringe. It also includes step-by-step photos for working in the back bump of the foundation chain, starting a row (joining) with a sc, working in the back loop and changing colors. There are no tails to weave in on this scarf, since the tails are turned into the fringe.
The pattern also includes a chart for making the snowflakes, if you prefer working from a chart!
The scarf can be made longer or shorter by adding or deleting foundation chains, per the pattern instructions.
Stained Glass Snowflake Scarf by Susan Lowman
Project Overview
The Stained Glass Snowflake Scarf is a crocheted accessory designed by Susan Lowman that combines vibrant contrasting colors against a black base to create a stained glass effect. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished scarf measuring approximately 5 1/2 inches wide by 50 inches long, with the option to extend the length as desired. Fringe is included as part of the finished design.
Craft and Technique
This project is executed entirely in crochet, making it suitable for crafters with easy to intermediate skill levels. The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet techniques to build the scarf structure, with the primary stitch being single crochet, which creates a dense, stable fabric ideal for maintaining the geometric snowflake motifs.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch forming the foundation and body of the scarf
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains and construction elements
- Yarn over (YO) – fundamental technique incorporated throughout the pattern
Materials and Yarn Weight
The scarf is worked in worsted weight acrylic yarn using a Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook. The pattern calls for 200 yards of black worsted weight yarn as the main color (MC), with 30 yards each of six contrasting colors: pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The photographed model was created using Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn in Black, Watermelon, Mango, Lemonade, Limelight, Blue Mint, and Grape.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 single crochet stitches and 14 single crochet rows equaling 4 inches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions.
Pattern Notes
This is a downloadable PDF pattern. If extending the scarf beyond the standard 50-inch length, additional yarn yardage will be required beyond the quantities specified. The design creates a visually striking effect through the strategic use of multiple bright colors against the dark background, evoking the appearance of traditional stained glass artwork.
