Project Overview
The Stacked Hearts Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Stitched Up By Emma. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 21 inches by 28 inches, making it an ideal size for a cozy throw or baby blanket. The design features a stacked hearts motif worked in a beautiful color-blocked arrangement using DK weight yarn.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a decorative crochet blanket with a stacked hearts design. The blanket combines multiple colors to create visual interest and depth, with the hearts stacked to form an attractive overall pattern. At approximately 21 inches by 28 inches, this blanket is versatile enough for use as a lap throw, baby blanket, or decorative accent piece.
Yarn and Materials
The Stacked Hearts Blanket requires four colors of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK weight yarn, with 100 grams of each color:
- Colour A: Ocean
- Colour B: Dusty Lilac
- Colour C: Storm Cloud
- Colour D: Frost
Additional materials include a 4mm crochet hook, scissors, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optional stitch markers to help track your progress throughout the project.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-level pattern uses fundamental crochet stitches and techniques that are accessible to newer crocheters while still creating an impressive finished piece. The primary stitches employed in this design include:
- Chain (CH): The foundation stitch used to begin the pattern and create chain spaces throughout the design
- Double Crochet (DC): A core stitch that builds height and structure in the blanket
- Single Crochet (SC): Used for detail work and creating tighter, more defined areas
- Slip Stitch (SLST): Employed to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
Pattern Structure and Construction
The pattern is organized using standard crochet abbreviations and notation conventions. Chain spaces (CHSP) are used to create openwork elements within the design. The blanket is worked in rounds (Rnd), with instructions to skip stitches (SK) at appropriate points to shape the hearts and create the stacked effect. The pattern uses bracket notation […] to indicate sections that should be repeated a specified number of times, and asterisk notation *…* to mark pattern repeats within rows or rounds.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 double crochet stitches by 9 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches when worked with the recommended 4mm hook and DK weight yarn. Maintaining this gauge is important for achieving the finished dimensions of approximately 21 inches by 28 inches.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Stacked Hearts Blanket is suitable for crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and following written patterns. The use of fundamental techniques and straightforward construction makes this an excellent choice for those looking to expand their skills while creating a beautiful, finished piece.
