Project Overview
The Stacked Hearts Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet design created by independent designer Stitched Up By Emma. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 21 inches by 28 inches, making it an ideal size for a cozy lap throw or decorative accent piece. The project uses DK weight yarn in a carefully curated four-color palette, allowing crafters to create a visually striking finished piece with minimal crochet experience.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for 400 grams total of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK yarn, distributed across four coordinating colorways:
- 100g of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK in Ocean (Colour A)
- 100g of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK in Dusty Lilac (Colour B)
- 100g of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK in Storm Cloud (Colour C)
- 100g of Deramores Studio Anti-piling DK in Frost (Colour D)
Additional tools include a 4mm crochet hook, scissors, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optional stitch markers to help track pattern repeats.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
This beginner pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques to build the stacked hearts design. The primary stitches employed include:
- Chain (CH) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of the blanket
- Double Crochet (DC) – a basic stitch that forms the body of the pattern
- Treble Crochet (TR) – a taller stitch used to add texture and dimension to the design
- Slip Stitch (SLST) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between color changes
The pattern incorporates Chain Spaces (CHSP) to create openwork areas that contribute to the hearts' visual definition. Crafters will work with standard pattern notation including repeats marked with asterisks (*…*) and bracketed sections […] to indicate how many times to repeat specified stitch sequences. The pattern is worked in rounds (Rnd), allowing for structured, symmetrical construction of the heart motifs.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The recommended gauge for this project is 15 Treble crochet stitches by 9 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches. Working to the correct gauge ensures the blanket reaches its intended finished size of approximately 21 inches by 28 inches. This moderate-sized blanket is perfect for draping over a chair, using as a stroller blanket, or gifting as a heartfelt handmade present.
Why Choose This Pattern
The Stacked Hearts Blanket is an excellent choice for beginner crocheters seeking to develop their skills while creating a beautiful, finished project. The use of DK weight yarn with a 4mm hook creates a fabric with good drape and definition, allowing the heart stitch pattern to stand out clearly. The anti-piling properties of Deramores Studio yarn ensure the blanket maintains its appearance and texture through regular use and washing. The four-color construction adds visual interest and complexity without requiring advanced techniques, making this an achievable and rewarding project for crafters of all experience levels.
