Product Description
St. Germain is a French liquor made from the blossom of the elderberry bush. It's still gathered into sacks by old men on bicycles in the French countryside and it really does taste a bit like flower petals. A little drop of it adds a bright, herbal element to almost any drink, and I do kind of love it.
Once I found this delicate stitch pattern, I knew it had to be St Germain! The motif is a simple combination of twisted cables and seed stitch, but the effect is detailed and complex. It looks perfect in a pale color like this blue where the texture can really pop.
I fell in love with the Bijou Spun at Rhinebeck. The 50/50 mix of cormo and yak fiber is soft and delicate and cozy. It’s perfect for accessories, and the finished hat and mitten set is light, but warm and comfortable to wear against your skin. I can only imagine a whole sweater's worth..... A couple of alternative yarns have been suggested and the yarn amounts given will knit both the hat and mittens.
St Germain Hat and Mitten Set by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
St Germain is a coordinated knitted accessory set featuring a hat and matching mittens, designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. The collection draws inspiration from the delicate floral character of St. Germain French liqueur, translating that aesthetic into wearable knitwear through refined stitch work and soft colorways. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a feminine accessory set ideal for those seeking to combine technical skill with elegant, understated design.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details
The St Germain design features a signature stitch motif combining twisted cables and seed stitch to create visual depth and texture. While the individual stitches are straightforward, their combination produces a detailed and complex appearance that rewards careful attention during knitting. The pattern works particularly well in pale and subtly shaded colorways, where the textural elements can stand out distinctly against the yarn base. The interplay between the structured cable work and the bumpy texture of seed stitch creates a sophisticated, multi-dimensional surface that catches light beautifully.
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Bijou Basin Bijou Spun Bijou Bliss yarn, requiring 2 skeins total for the complete hat and mitten set. The yarn is a 50/50 blend of cormo and yak fiber, combining softness with durability. This fiber blend is specifically suited to accessories, offering a delicate hand feel while providing genuine warmth and comfort against the skin. The yarn comes in subtly shaded blue colorways that enhance the texture of the stitch pattern. The finished accessories are notably light in weight while maintaining excellent insulating properties, making them comfortable for extended wear.
Yarn Weight and Needle Requirements
St Germain is designed for sport weight and 4-ply yarn, creating a refined fabric with excellent stitch definition. This lighter yarn weight contributes to the delicate, feminine aesthetic of the finished pieces while still providing adequate warmth for practical use as winter accessories.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, St Germain requires knitters to be comfortable with cable techniques, seed stitch, and the ability to read and follow a detailed stitch pattern. While not a beginner project, it remains accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire.
