Product Description

The Square Shape Filet Square Crochet Pattern is an easy pattern for a finished square that is 7 inches wide and 7.5 inches long. This fun and easy pattern creates a granny like square perfect for a coaster, dishcloth or to piece together as a baby blanket or shawl. This shape is especially easy because of the way the filet pattern stacks both vertically and horizontally. Keep an eye out for my Shapes N Blocks Baby Blanket, which this is one of six shapes for!

The pattern features written directions and calls for light or DK weight, size 3 yarn and an G6/ 4 mm hook. For this easy level pattern, you should know how to complete double crochet stitches and chain stitches. The pattern features 2 start options, either use of the foundation double crochet stitch, or work a chain and then work double crochet stitches into the chain. The optional border for the pattern calls for knowledge of the single crochet stitch.

Square Shape Filet Square by Caitlin's Contagious Creations

Project Overview

The Square Shape Filet Square is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Caitlin's Contagious Creations. This versatile square measures 7.5 inches tall by 7 inches wide and works equally well as a standalone dishcloth, a building block for blankets and throws, or as a decorative accent piece. The finished square displays the same appearance from both sides, making it ideal for projects where both surfaces are visible.

Skill Level and Prerequisites

Rated as Beginner+, this pattern requires foundational knowledge of essential crochet stitches. Crafters should be comfortable with foundation double crochet, double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitches before beginning. The pattern's straightforward flat construction—worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round—makes it an excellent project for building confidence in basic crochet techniques.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 30 yards of #3 light weight yarn for the main square; optional 10 additional yards of #3 yarn if adding a border
  • Hook: G 6 / 4 mm crochet hook
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches and Techniques

This pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches to create its filet structure. The core stitches used include:

  • Foundation Double Crochet (FDC): An efficient starting method that combines the foundation chain and first row of double crochet into a single step
  • Double Crochet (DC): The primary stitch that forms the body of the square
  • Single Crochet (SC): Used for finishing details and optional borders
  • Chain (Ch): Creates the open spaces characteristic of filet crochet patterns

The filet crochet technique creates an open, lacy appearance through strategic placement of chain spaces and solid double crochet stitches. This method allows for intricate visual patterns while maintaining a relatively simple stitch sequence.

Pattern Construction Details

Each row of the Square Shape Filet Square contains 31 stitches, with chain spaces counting toward this total. The pattern is worked flat in a back-and-forth motion across multiple rows. The turning chain of 2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch in the total count.

The pattern offers flexibility in the starting method. Crafters can begin using foundation double crochet stitches in the first row, or alternatively, create a traditional chain foundation followed by a row of double crochet stitches. This adaptability allows makers to choose the method most comfortable for their skill level.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 17 double crochet stitches by 12 rows equaling 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall. Maintaining proper gauge ensures the finished square reaches its intended dimensions of 7.5 inches tall by 7 inches wide.

Finishing Options

While the basic square is complete as-is, the pattern includes an optional border that requires an additional 10 yards of #3 weight yarn. This border allows crafters to customize their finished piece and create a more polished appearance if desired.
