Product Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE PATTERN IS AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUAL PURCHASE

*Note: this contest announcement originally ran last December, before 2010 got hijacked by the juggernaut that is Lord of the Rings. Today I am happy to announce that: * it's on! * the game is afoot * go for it * I'm sheepishly acknowledging my own procrastination (oops!) A couple changes worth noting:

  1. deadline for entry is now December 25th (natch!)
  2. Entry photos will be posted on the blog as they come in, with a separate page for all of them.
  3. Winner will be decided by reader vote, instead of judging
  4. Prize is a full set of Two Towers patterns, including the "In Dreams" mystery shawl KAL that will kick off the next leg of our journey in January.
  5. You don't have to finish the scarf, just finish enough of one side that you can get a decent picture. I think it will be lots of fun to see what everybody can do with this pattern.*

Spruce Beaded Lace Scarf by Susan Pandorf

What is Being Made

The Spruce scarf is a beaded lace scarf from the garden variety collection by designer Susan Pandorf. This finished accessory measures 16 inches wide by 60 inches long, making it a versatile garment suitable for everyday wear or special occasions. The scarf combines delicate lace patterning with decorative beadwork, creating an elegant piece that showcases both knitting and beading techniques.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs lace knitting techniques to create an openwork fabric with decorative holes and eyelets. Lace knitting requires careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to form the characteristic pattern. The beaded lace construction involves integrating seed beads and accent beads directly into the knitted fabric during the knitting process, requiring coordination between traditional knitting stitches and bead placement.

The scarf is worked from the needles using a combination of standard knitting stitches enhanced with strategic yarn overs and decreases that form the lace pattern. The intermediate difficulty rating reflects the need to manage both the lace stitch pattern and the beading process simultaneously, which requires focus and precision.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: 1300 yards of Handmaiden seasilk or other fingering weight yarn
  • Needles: Size 4 needles for knitting
  • Beads: 1500 size 8 seed beads and 110 star or other accent beads or charms for embellishment
  • Additional Tools: Crochet hook for beading assistance
  • Gauge: 5 stitches and 7 rows equal 1 inch when blocked

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, which is a delicate yarn suitable for creating fine, detailed lace work. The recommended Handmaiden seasilk is a premium yarn choice that provides excellent drape and a lustrous finish, though the pattern allows for substitution with other fingering weight options. The 1300-yard yardage requirement ensures adequate length for the full 60-inch scarf while accounting for gauge and finishing.

Beading Integration

The beading process involves incorporating 1500 size 8 seed beads throughout the lace pattern, along with 110 larger star beads or charms used as accent elements. The crochet hook serves as a tool to assist with bead placement and threading, a common technique in beaded knitting projects. This combination of small seed beads and larger accent beads creates visual interest and dimension within the lace structure.
