Product Description
This is an ad-free version of a free pattern available on my [blog.][1]
• DESCRIPTION: Using simple stitches (just ch, SC, and DC) allows you to create a beautiful open fabric. The small openings give it a feminine twist while the solid sections ensure its usability. It would make a great shawl or even a lightweight blanket!
• GAUGE & SIZING: Gauge (tension) isn’t very important in this project. For reference, my gauge is 7 DC worked in pattern stitch and 13 rows per 4”. Play around with hook sizes until you find one that makes a fabric you like. This pattern is written to produce a washcloth that is roughly 10.5 inches by 9 inches.
• ABBREVIATIONS & STITCHES USED: ch = chain st = stitch sp = space SC = single crochet DC = double crochet * * = Repeat what is in asterisks the indicated number of times
• MATERIALS: About 120 yards of I Love This Cotton Yarn in Paris in June or any #4 cotton or cotton blend. A 4.0 mm (F) hook Tapestry needle for weaving in ends Stitch markers if desired.
Spring Windows Crochet Dishcloth by Amber Killian
Project Overview
Spring Windows is a beginner-friendly crochet dishcloth design created by independent designer Amber Killian. This pattern is part of her Washcloth Collection, released on a biweekly schedule throughout 2021. The design combines simple construction techniques with an elegant open fabric structure, making it suitable not only as a functional dishcloth but also as a lightweight shawl or blanket component.
What You'll Create
The Spring Windows pattern produces a versatile crocheted textile featuring a beautiful balance of open and solid sections. The design showcases feminine aesthetic appeal through strategically placed openings while maintaining the structural integrity and absorbency needed for practical dishcloth use. The open fabric creates visual interest and allows for breathability, making it an ideal choice for spring and summer projects.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-level pattern uses only three fundamental crochet stitches, making it an excellent introduction to crochet construction for new crafters:
- Chain stitch (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the base chain and establish pattern structure
- Single crochet (SC) – A basic tight stitch that creates dense, solid fabric sections
- Double crochet (DC) – A taller stitch that contributes to the open, airy portions of the design
The pattern uses a multiple of 2 + 1, meaning the stitch repeat is based on groups of 2 stitches plus 1 additional stitch. This straightforward repeat structure makes the pattern easy to follow and memorize as you work through rows.
Yarn and Materials
Spring Windows is designed to work with aran weight or worsted weight yarn, both medium-weight options that provide good stitch definition and drape. These yarn weights are ideal for creating the balanced open and solid fabric sections that define this design. You will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for your chosen yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and fabric structure.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, Spring Windows is perfect for crocheters just starting their journey or those looking to practice fundamental stitches. The limited stitch vocabulary and simple repeat pattern allow crafters to build confidence while creating a beautiful, functional finished piece.
Pattern Collection Context
Spring Windows is the eighth design in Amber Killian's Washcloth Collection, a series featuring varied complexity and style. The collection spans the full year with patterns released every other Saturday, offering crafters a diverse range of techniques from lacy, lightweight designs to sturdy, dense constructions. Completing the full collection provides both a comprehensive washcloth wardrobe and progressive skill development in crochet techniques.
