Product Description
“Spring forward, Fall back” A little phrase to help us remember which way the clocks change twice a year to make the most of those daylight hours. Here in the UK, at the end of March, the clocks go forward one hour, marking the beginning of British Summertime. The lighter evenings always make me feel like I have more energy to get things done and, as the days begin to warm up I find socks are the perfect project for outdoor knitting too!
Knit from the cuff down with a cute picot cast on and a heel flap and gusset construction. The pattern is written for three ankle circumferences. Leg and foot length can be easily adjusted to suit.
Pattern NotesInstructions are included for picot cast on. Lace pattern instructions are both charted and written

What is Being Made
Spring Forward Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for ankle socks designed by Forest Flower Knits. The pattern takes inspiration from the seasonal clock change that occurs at the end of March in the UK, marking the beginning of British Summertime and longer daylight hours. These socks are designed as a portable knitting project suitable for outdoor crafting during the warming spring season. The pattern accommodates three different ankle circumferences, making it adaptable for various foot sizes, with adjustable leg and foot length options to customize the fit for individual knitters.
Knitting Techniques
Spring Forward Socks employs several classic sock knitting techniques to create a well-constructed, durable garment. The socks are knit from the cuff down, a popular method that allows knitters to try on the sock as they work and easily adjust length. The pattern features a decorative picot cast on, which creates a delicate, ornamental edge at the cuff that adds visual interest to the finished sock. The heel construction uses a heel flap and gusset method, a traditional approach that provides structure and durability in the heel area—the part of the sock that experiences the most wear and stress during use.
Stitches and Construction
While the PDF content provided does not detail the specific stitch patterns used throughout the leg and foot sections, the pattern incorporates fundamental sock knitting stitches combined with the heel flap and gusset construction method. This technique typically involves working a reinforced heel flap in stockinette stitch, then shaping a gusset to smoothly transition from the leg to the foot, ensuring proper fit and comfort around the ankle area.
Materials and Yarn Weight
Spring Forward Socks is designed to be knit with 4ply or fingering weight sock yarn. The pattern calls for one 100-gram skein of yarn, which provides 400 meters of fiber—a standard yardage for ankle sock projects. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Ducky Darlings SW Merino/nylon 4ply yarn in the limited edition colorway "Viola," developed for The Flower Power Fund. This yarn blend combines merino wool with nylon, a common pairing in sock yarns that provides softness from the merino while the nylon adds durability and elasticity for long-lasting wear.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern recommends 2.5mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles, or whichever needle size is needed to obtain the correct gauge for your chosen yarn. The needle size may vary depending on individual knitting tension and the specific yarn selected, making gauge swatching an important step before beginning the project.
Difficulty Level
Spring Forward Socks is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic techniques and are comfortable working with DPNs or small circumference circular needles, managing multiple stitches, and executing heel and gusset shaping. The picot cast on and heel flap construction require some experience, though both techniques are well-established in sock knitting patterns.
