Spiral Beanie Crochet Hat

What Is Being Made

The Spiral Beanie is an original crochet hat design created by Janferie MacKintosh of The Crafty Therapist. This cute beanie-style hat features a distinctive spiral shell pattern that creates an eye-catching, visually interesting design. The finished hat measures 19 inches in circumference with a height of 8 to 8.5 inches, making it a one-size-fits-most accessory suitable for everyday wear.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Spiral Beanie employs a simple spiral shell pattern as its primary design technique. This straightforward approach makes the pattern accessible while still producing a striking finished garment. The spiral motif repeats throughout the hat structure, creating visual depth and texture without requiring advanced technical skills. The pattern is designed to be worked in the round, a fundamental crochet construction method that builds the hat from the crown downward.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches to construct the beanie. Key stitches include:

  • Chain (Ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of the hat
  • Single Crochet (Sc) – a short, tight stitch that provides structure
  • Double Crochet (Dc) – a taller stitch that likely forms the shell pattern elements
  • Slip Stitch (Sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Skip (Sk) – used to create shaping and pattern spacing

The pattern is written in both US and UK crochet terminology, allowing crocheters to work with their preferred terminology system.

Yarn and Materials

The Spiral Beanie requires less than 100 grams of yarn, making it an economical project. The recommended yarn is Hobbycraft Women's Institute Soft & Smooth Aran weight in 100% acrylic fiber. This yarn choice is recommended specifically because it is beautifully soft and features anti-pilling properties, which helps the finished hat maintain its appearance through regular wear and washing.

Required materials include a US Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook for the main construction and a US Size 7 (4.5mm) hook for finishing details. Additional supplies needed are a yarn needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker for tracking rounds during construction.

Yarn Weight and Skill Level

This pattern is worked with aran and worsted weight yarns, which are medium-weight options that create a fabric with good drape and warmth. Despite being labeled as intermediate skill level, the straightforward spiral shell technique and simple stitch combination make this an excellent project for beginners who have mastered basic crochet fundamentals. The pattern's simplicity allows newer crocheters to focus on consistent tension and stitch formation while still achieving a professional-looking finished hat.

Pattern Format

The Spiral Beanie is provided as a downloadable PDF document. The pattern spans 8 pages total, with pages 1-4 containing US terminology instructions and pages 5-8 containing the same pattern written in UK crochet terminology. Crocheters should print only the pages corresponding to their preferred terminology system to avoid confusion during the project.
