Product Description
This cowl is deceptively simple. Sure, casting on and binding off both take for ever, but it’s a fun project, utilizing Cat Bordhi’s truly magical moebius cast on and my very favorite I cord bind off and a whole bunch of easy, beautiful knitting in between.
Lace–Weight Yarn: 430 yds lace-weight yarn. I used Schoppel Wolle Lace Ball, 1536 Fuschia. Gauge: 24 sts = 4 inches in garter stitch, measured after blocking. Needles: US #3/3.25mm, 40-47” circular needle. Measurements: 70" circ., 6" tall.
Sport-Weight Yarn: 300 yards sport-weight yarn. I used Zauberball Starke 6, 2092. Gauge: 20 st= 4” in garter stitch, measured after blocking. Needles: US #5/3.75mm 40-47” circular needle. Measurements: 66" circ., 6" tall.
Worsted-Weight Yarn: 250 yards worsted-weight yarn. I used Schoppel Wolle Gradient, colorway 1508. Gauge: 16 sts = 4” in garter stitch, measured after blocking. Needles: US #9/5.5mm 40-47” circular Measurements: 42" circ., 9" tall.
Spiral Galaxy Cowl by Shannon Squire
What Is Being Made
The Spiral Galaxy Cowl is a knitted neck accessory designed by Shannon Squire. This cowl is offered in three yarn weight variations, allowing crafters to choose based on their preferred yarn and desired finished dimensions. Each version produces a circular cowl suitable for wearing around the neck.
Available Versions and Finished Measurements
The pattern includes three distinct versions accommodating different yarn weights:
- Lace-Weight Version: 70" circumference, 6" tall
- Sport-Weight Version: 66" circumference, 6" tall
- Worsted-Weight Version: 42" circumference, 9" tall
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Spiral Galaxy Cowl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an ideal choice for newer knitters as it requires minimal stitch manipulation and produces consistent, forgiving results.
The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous spiral patterning. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish.
