Product Description
The Spinnaker Socks feature a stitch pattern that I stumbled across while looking for something else entirely and loved how the addition of a few simple slipped stitches added so much texture to basic garter stitch triangles. The triangles made me think of sails, so I’ve named these socks after the Spinnaker Tower, a tower in Portsmouth that is designed to look like a sail.
The socks are knitted from the top-down, starting with a 1 x 3 ribbed cuff that flows seamlessly into the sail pattern. The Spinnaker pattern runs round the whole of the leg and across the top of the foot. The heel flap has a slipped stitch pattern and a round heel turn. The toe is created with shaping down each side and is gathered at the end – no need for any pesky Kitchener stitch!
The Spinnaker Socks are knitted in DK weight yarn, which makes them perfect for speedy gift knitting! The slipped stitch cables are also really easy and can be worked without a cable needle.
Spinnaker Socks by Vikki Bird
What is Being Made
The Spinnaker Socks are a pair of top-down knitted socks designed by Vikki Bird. These socks feature a distinctive sail-inspired stitch pattern that runs around the leg and across the top of the foot. The design draws inspiration from the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, which is architecturally designed to resemble a sail. The socks combine functional construction with decorative texture, making them suitable for both everyday wear and as handmade gifts.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Spinnaker Socks employ several key knitting techniques that create visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters:
- Top-down construction: The socks are knitted from the cuff downward, allowing for easy customization of length and fit
- Ribbed cuff: The socks begin with a 1 x 3 ribbed cuff that transitions seamlessly into the main stitch pattern
- Slipped stitch cables: The pattern features slipped stitch cables that can be worked without a cable needle, simplifying the construction process
- Heel flap with slipped stitches: A traditional heel flap incorporates slipped stitch detailing for added texture and durability
- French heel turn: Also known as a round heel turn, this technique creates a well-fitted heel cup
- Gathered toe: The toe is shaped with decreases down each side and gathered at the end, eliminating the need for Kitchener stitch grafting
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Spinnaker Socks feature a creative combination of basic and textured stitches:
- Garter stitch triangles: Simple garter stitch forms the foundation of the sail-inspired triangular motifs
- Slipped stitches: Slipped stitches are used throughout to add significant texture and visual depth to the basic garter stitch structure. These stitches create cable-like effects without requiring a cable needle
- Ribbing: The 1 x 3 rib cuff provides stretch and a classic sock opening
The designer notes that the addition of simple slipped stitches transforms basic garter stitch triangles into a textured, visually interesting pattern that evokes the appearance of sails.
Materials
The Spinnaker Socks are designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn, which offers several advantages for this project. DK weight allows for relatively quick knitting compared to fingering weight sock yarn, making these socks ideal for speedy gift knitting. The pattern is worked on needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, typically in the range used for sock construction. The DK weight specification makes this project particularly appealing for knitters seeking to complete a pair of socks in a reasonable timeframe without sacrificing the detailed stitch pattern work.
Difficulty Level
The Spinnaker Socks are rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the pattern incorporates several techniques such as slipped stitch cables, heel flaps, and shaped toes, the straightforward nature of the stitches and the elimination of complex cable needle work keeps the difficulty accessible to knitters with some experience. The slipped stitch cables are specifically noted as easy to work, making this pattern an excellent choice for intermediate knitters looking to expand their sock-knitting skills.
