I just love spiders and find them so beautiful. This pattern will enable you to create your own little spiderling sculptures, with thin wire legs that you can pose just how you want.
It’s suitable for beginner, but you do need to feel a little confident about shaping your spiderling’s legs.

Spiderlings Knitting Pattern by ButterflyLove1
What is Being Made
Spiderlings are small decorative knitted creatures designed as charming embellishments or standalone ornaments. This pattern by Dawn Finney creates two sizes of spiderlings: a larger version approximately 1.25 inches (3cm) in diameter and a smaller version around 0.75 inches (2cm) in diameter. These tiny knitted pieces are perfect for adding whimsical details to crafts, displays, or collections.
Craft and Construction Method
This is a knitting project suitable for beginners, making it an excellent choice for those new to the craft or looking for a quick, satisfying make. Each spiderling is constructed as a single unified piece rather than requiring multiple components to be assembled. The pattern emphasizes efficiency—no tension square is required before beginning, allowing crafters to start immediately and complete the project quickly.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Stocking stitch (St st): The primary stitch structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form the characteristic smooth, V-patterned fabric that comprises the spiderling body
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitches form the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P): Purl stitches alternate with knit rows to create stocking stitch
- Increase (Inc): Increases are worked by knitting into both the front and back of a single stitch, allowing the spiderling body to expand to its intended size
- Knitting together (Tog): Stitches are decreased by working them together
Tension and Needle Sizing
A critical technique in this pattern is the use of deliberately tight tension. Crafters are instructed to use knitting needles one to two sizes smaller than the minimum recommended size for their chosen yarn. For example, if the yarn recommends US3/3.25mm needles, the pattern calls for US2/2.75mm needles instead. This intentional tension adjustment produces a small, densely knit spiderling body that prevents stuffing from showing through the fabric weave, ensuring a neat, finished appearance.
Materials Required
The spiderlings are created using lightweight yarns and minimal materials:
- Yarn: 5g of black 4ply yarn (also suitable for sport weight yarn). The DK and sport weight classifications ensure the yarn is thin enough to create appropriately scaled, delicate spiderlings
- Knitting needles: Two needles in size US2/2.75mm or as adjusted according to the pattern's tension guidance
- Eyes: Embellishments to be attached to the finished spiderling body
- Stuffing: Lightweight fiberfill or similar material for lightly padding the body
- Thin wire: Four lengths of thin wire are threaded through the completed body to form and shape the spiderling's legs
Finishing Process
Once the knitted body is complete, the spiderling undergoes several finishing steps. Eyes are attached to give the creature character and definition. The body is then lightly stuffed to create dimension and structure. After stuffing, the opening is sewn closed to secure the filling. The final and distinctive step involves threading four lengths of thin wire through the body, which are then shaped and trimmed to the desired length to create the spiderling's characteristic eight legs.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Classified as a beginner difficulty project, Spiderlings requires only basic knitting knowledge and skills. The straightforward construction, quick completion time, and use of fundamental stitches make this an ideal pattern for knitters building their skills or experienced crafters seeking a fast, gratifying project.
