Product Description

Spider wrap is knitted in the round, but results in kind of a rectangle shape. Knitting is flexible like spider nets, (and yes I do like spiders, number one, they produce silk thread, how can one not like them? (And please, google “spider nets”, totally fascinating!))

Photos besides text will guide you through the magic loop start of the wrap and you will make your way to the next steps, where smooth, perfectly fun knitting will follow you all the way to the finish. My design is aiming for relaxing, but not boring knitting resulting in something you will love to wear.

Spider Wrap by Lena Strandberg

What is Being Made

The Spider Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Lena Strandberg. Despite being knitted in the round using circular needles, this wrap results in a distinctive rectangular shape that drapes beautifully when worn. The design draws inspiration from spider webs and their natural flexibility, creating a garment that combines structural interest with wearable comfort.

Knitting Techniques

This project employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its unique construction and aesthetic:

  • Magic Loop Cast-On: The wrap begins with a magic loop technique, which the pattern notes is slightly fiddly at the start but is thoroughly guided by step-by-step photos to help knitters navigate this initial phase
  • Circular Knitting: The entire wrap is knitted in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and even tension throughout
  • Lace Work: A lace section features prominently in the design, requiring pointy needles to maintain control of delicate stitches and ensure clean stitch definition
  • Stitch Markers: Six stitch markers are used throughout the project to track pattern repeats and shaping increases

Stitches and Pattern Elements

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern summary provided, the Spider Wrap incorporates lace stitches that create an open, web-like fabric texture. The pattern is designed to progress from the initial setup through increasingly relaxing knitting sequences, avoiding monotony while maintaining an enjoyable rhythm for the knitter.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Yarn: Approximately 1600 meters of drapey lace weight or fingering weight yarn is required. The choice of yarn weight and fiber content significantly impacts the final drape and appearance of the wrap, with lighter, more fluid yarns emphasizing the lace pattern and rectangular silhouette.

Needles: Three needle sizes are specified to accommodate gauge adjustments and pattern sections: 3mm (US 2.5), 3.25mm (US 3), and 3.75mm (US 5), or sizes as needed to meet the pattern's gauge requirements. Pointy needles are preferable, particularly for working the lace sections where precision and stitch clarity are essential.

Notions: Additional materials include six stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, one safety pin for holding stitches if needed, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Design Philosophy

Lena Strandberg's Spider Wrap aims to deliver relaxing, meditative knitting that never becomes boring. The progression from the slightly challenging magic loop beginning through smooth, flowing knitting creates an engaging project experience. The finished wrap is designed to be a cherished garment that knitters will love to wear, combining the natural flexibility and beauty of knitted fabric with the structural inspiration of spider webs.
