Product Description
Socks of Sunshine and Happiness (SoSaH!) are a top down sock based on a modified Sky Sock Architecture from Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters. You should not need the book knit these socks, but it's a great book and well worth purchasing anyway.
The pattern is charted throughout. It is suitable for anyone who can read charts and knit simple cables and lace. The finished sock looks far more complex than it is to knit.
400 yards of sock yarn should be sufficient for most sizes. If you have a wide or long foot, you may wish to purchase additional yarn.
To make a larger or smaller sock, adjust gauge. For a 9" foot circumference, a gauge of 8 spi is needed. For a 10" foot circumference, a gauge of 7.5 spi is needed.

What is Being Made
SoSaH is a pair of knitted socks designed for an 8-inch foot circumference, though the pattern accommodates adjustments for different sizes through gauge modification. These socks feature an elegant combination of lace and cable stitch patterns that develop progressively across the arch of the foot, creating a visually striking design that appears more complex than its construction method suggests.
Construction and Design Architecture
The sock construction is based on Cat Bordhi's Sky Sock Architecture, a method that allows intricate stitch patterns to develop naturally and organically. Despite their sophisticated appearance, the socks are built from a simple seven-row repeat, making them accessible to intermediate-level knitters. This architectural approach ensures that the lace and cable elements grow seamlessly from the cuff down through the leg and across the foot arch, creating a cohesive, flowing design.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Lace stitches that form delicate openwork patterns throughout the sock
- Cable stitches that twist and intertwine, with the largest cables measuring 3 over 3
- Grafting for seamless finishing at the toe
- Cable work that can be executed with or without a cable needle, depending on knitter preference
Materials and Yarn Requirements
SoSaH requires approximately 400 yards of 4-ply sock yarn. The pattern samples showcase versatile yarn options including Three Irish Girls Adorn (80% Merino, 20% Nylon, 430 yards) in colorway Cian, and Three Irish Girls McClellan (60% Merino, 30% Bamboo, 10% Nylon, 410 yards) in colorway Sheepn. These yarn compositions provide durability, elasticity, and comfort suitable for everyday sock wear.
Needles and Tools
- Size 0 circular needles as the primary needle choice
- Construction method using either Magic Loop or 2 circular needles for working small circumferences
- Needle selection should accommodate the gauge required for your desired finished size
- Stitch markers (optional but recommended for pattern tracking)
- Cable needle (optional, as cables can be worked without one)
- Grafting needle for finishing the toe with a seamless Kitchener stitch
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, SoSaH is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in lace and cable techniques. The seven-row repeat structure provides a manageable rhythm, and the gradual development of pattern elements allows knitters to build confidence as they progress through the sock.
Gauge Considerations
Gauge is essential for achieving the intended 8- to 8.5-inch foot circumference. Knitters can adjust needle size to modify gauge and create larger or smaller socks as needed, making this pattern adaptable to various foot sizes within a single design framework.
