Product Description
SOS is a half circle shawl that begins with a gentle curve at the back of the neck, and expands in both length and width according to the taste of the knitter. The sizes shown in this listing are for the fingering weight versions, knit as written with 2 repeats of the second lace pattern. it is, however, very easy to customize this shawl by working more or less repeats of either lace pattern, or by choosing a different yarn weight, which will change the finished size. Yarn requirements and gauge for yarn weights from Lace to Aran are included in the document. The main body of the shawl is worked in a simple but pretty lace pattern that is easily memorized. The bind off is worked as a continuation of the edging. The lovely photos of my friend in her bridal gear were taken by Rebecca Ford, who is located in Grande Prairie AB, Canada. Rebecca graciously allowed me to use them here.
SOS Shawl by Trisha Paetsch
What is Being Made
The SOS Shawl is an advanced knitting project designed by Trisha Paetsch that creates a versatile triangular shawl with customizable dimensions. The finished shawl ranges from approximately 42 inches by 16 inches and larger, with the final size dependent on yarn weight selection and the number of pattern repeats chosen by the knitter.
Design Structure and Variations
This shawl pattern offers multiple design variations, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece based on personal preference. The construction begins with the main lace section worked in the Lace Butterfly pattern, with strategic increases continuing until the stitch count for the lace portion reaches either 210 or 420 stitches. Following the Lace Butterfly foundation, the Cascade pattern is then worked as many or as few times as desired, giving knitters complete control over the final appearance and proportions of their shawl. The finished garment can emphasize either the Lace Butterfly pattern as the dominant design element or feature the Cascade pattern as the primary focus.
Knitting Techniques Used
The SOS Shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques appropriate for experienced crafters. The pattern utilizes lace knitting with strategic increases to shape the shawl. Knitters have the option to incorporate beading into their project using the crochet hook method, where beads are placed on the wrong side rows of the Lace Butterfly pattern. Beads are positioned into the yarn overs within knit and bind-off stitches, adding embellishment and visual interest to the lace sections.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern features two primary lace stitch patterns:
- Lace Butterfly pattern: Forms the foundation and main body of the shawl, worked with increases until reaching the specified stitch count
- Cascade pattern: Applied after the Lace Butterfly section, offering flexibility in repetition and allowing customization of the shawl's final design balance
Both patterns are provided in written instructions and charted formats, giving knitters options for following the pattern according to their preferred learning style.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The SOS Shawl is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for yarn selection. The final shawl dimensions will vary based on the yarn weight chosen, with lighter weights producing smaller finished pieces and heavier weights creating larger shawls. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the selected yarn weight are required to complete this project.
Pattern Format and Documentation
This downloadable PDF pattern includes comprehensive instructions across multiple pages, with both written and charted formats for the stitch patterns. The pattern provides flexible printing options, allowing knitters to print only the sections they need, whether that includes written instructions, charts, stitch patterns, or combinations thereof.
