Product Description
The Sol square is part of the Friendship Blanket CAL, hosted by Helen from Sunflower Cottage Crochet and is a collaboration of 25 designers, where each designer designed a square for this blanket, the blanket is made of 40 squares.
The Sol square is a combination many stitches, including puff stitches for texture! I was inspired by the sunflowers of Sunflower cottage.

What Is Being Made
The Sol Square is a crochet square designed as part of the Friendship blanket CAL (Crochet-Along) hosted by Sunflower Cottage Crochet. Named after the sun in honor of Sunflower Cottage, this square serves as a modular component that can be combined with other squares to create a larger blanket project. The finished square measures 9 inches and is suitable for crafters with intermediate crochet experience.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Sol Square is worked in rounds, building outward from a center point to create a geometric, repeating pattern. The pattern uses standing stitches and color changes at the start of each round, allowing for clean transitions and design flexibility. This round-based construction method is ideal for creating symmetrical motifs that can be easily joined with other squares to form a larger blanket.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build texture and visual interest:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and spacing
- Single crochet (sc) – provides tight, dense fabric
- Half double crochet (hdc) – offers medium height and drape
- Double crochet (dc) – creates taller stitches for open, airy sections
- Half double V stitch (hdcV) – a decorative stitch variation that adds visual texture
- Puff stitch (ps) – creates dimensional, textured elements
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing
Materials and Gauge
The Sol Square is designed to work with any #4 worsted weight yarn, offering flexibility in color and fiber choice. The pattern requires approximately 30 grams of yarn per square. A US H (5.0mm) crochet hook is used to achieve the correct gauge of 6 rows by 15 stitches in double crochet, measuring 4 inches. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends and joining squares together.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Classified as Adventurous beginner to intermediate, the Sol Square is accessible to crafters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more complex stitch combinations and round-based construction. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and uses standard US crochet terminology with clear abbreviations and notation, including parentheses to indicate stitches worked in the same stitch and repeat symbols for efficiency.
