Sockophilia by Kathleen Baer
What is Being Made
Sockophilia is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Kathleen Baer. The pattern offers flexibility in construction method, providing both top-down and toe-up knitting instructions to accommodate different knitter preferences and techniques. These socks combine functional footwear with decorative lace patterning, making them suitable for knitters seeking a project that balances wearability with aesthetic interest.
Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques. The primary construction method is top-down knitting, where the sock is worked from the cuff downward to the toe, though toe-up construction instructions are also included for knitters who prefer to begin at the foot and work toward the cuff. The pattern features lace knitting, incorporating a vintage lace motif sourced from a classic tea cozy design that gained wider recognition through Elizabeth Zimmermann's renowned "Baby Sweater on Two Needles" from Knitter's Almanac. This lace technique adds visual interest and texture to the finished socks while maintaining their functional structure.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes lace stitching as its primary decorative element. The specific lace pattern is a vintage design that creates an elegant, openwork effect characteristic of traditional lace knitting. While the PDF excerpt does not detail every individual stitch abbreviation, the lace pattern requires intermediate-level knitting skills, indicating the use of yarn overs, decreases, and other stitch manipulations typical of lace construction.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn, a lightweight fingering or sport-weight yarn suitable for creating fitted, durable socks with good stitch definition
- Needles: 2.25mm needles (knitters are advised to verify needle size in millimeters rather than US sizing, as sizing standards vary)
Difficulty Level
Sockophilia is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. This classification reflects the lace pattern work required, which demands familiarity with yarn overs, decreases, and reading lace charts or written instructions. Knitters should have foundational sock-knitting experience or be comfortable learning sock construction techniques before beginning this project.
Pattern Format
This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use and allowing knitters to reference instructions digitally or print them for convenient reference during the knitting process.
