Sockeaters Knitted Toy by Stana D. Sortor
What is Being Made
Sockeaters are whimsical knitted toys designed by Stana D. Sortor. These playful creatures are constructed to stand between 11 to 17 inches (28 to 41 centimeters) tall, depending on the yarn weight selected. Each Sockeater is a beginner-friendly knitting project that incorporates a real sock as a creative design element, making it a unique and charming handmade toy suitable for children or as a decorative piece.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners learning to work with double-pointed needles. The construction uses several essential shaping methods to form the toy's three-dimensional structure. Increases are created using the KFB (knit in front and back) technique, which generates two stitches from a single stitch to expand the fabric where needed. Decreases are accomplished through SSK (slip, slip, knit) and K2tog (knit two together) methods to taper and shape the toy's body. The pattern also incorporates purl decreases using P2tog (purl two together) for additional shaping flexibility. These techniques work together to create the toy's dimensional form while remaining accessible to knitters new to the craft.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Sockeaters pattern utilizes basic knit and purl stitches as its foundation. Key stitch techniques include:
- KFB (Knit in Front and Back): An increase method that creates two stitches from one, used to expand sections of the toy
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease that reduces two stitches to one
- K2tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease method for shaping
- P2tog (Purl Two Together): A purl-based decrease for areas worked in reverse stockinette or textured sections
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric created through alternating knit and purl rows
The pattern also incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and stitch holders to manage active stitches during construction.
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: Approximately one ball of sport to medium weight yarn in your chosen color. The pattern is particularly well-suited to self-striping sock yarn, which adds visual interest to the finished toy without additional color changes. The final toy size varies based on yarn weight selected.
Needles and Notions: Double-pointed needles in US size #3/3.25mm (a set of 5 needles) are recommended, or alternatively use needles two sizes smaller than those suggested on your yarn label. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for finishing, a crochet hook, scissors, stitch markers, stitch holders, a small bag of polyester fiberfill for stuffing, and a small amount of black embroidery yarn for details.
Special Materials: Each Sockeater requires one single sock—baby socks in cute patterns and complementary colors work best—and two funky-looking buttons for the eyes, adding personality and charm to the finished toy.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to working with double-pointed needles and basic shaping techniques. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and clear construction method make Sockeaters accessible to knitters just beginning their journey into toy making.
