Social media handle: #SnowHeartVest
CONSTRUCTION
The vest is knitted in the round, bottom-up to the armholes then split into front and back, which are then finished flat. The front braiding is worked continuously while carving out the V-shaped neckline. Back is worked in stockinette stitch and then joined to the front with the 3-needles binding-off technique. The “false hem” asymmetrical armscye shaping is done by picking up-stitches around armhole and using a combination of different ribbings and short-rows technique. Ease of approx. 5-10cm / 2”-4”.

SnowHeart Vest by Elly's Knitting Days
What is Being Made
SnowHeart is a relatively close-fitting knitted vest designed by Elly's Knitting Days. This slipover garment celebrates sophisticated tailoring with lavish braids adorning the front panel and a textured V-shaped neckline. The design features an asymmetrical armscye with a distinctive "false hem" edge detail, making it a stylish piece suitable for business casual attire. The vest provides approximately 5-10 cm (2"-4") of ease for a refined, body-conscious fit.
Construction Techniques
SnowHeart employs a strategic bottom-up construction method worked in the round to the armholes, then split into separate front and back sections finished flat. This hybrid approach combines the efficiency of circular knitting with the precision of flat-panel shaping.
- Main body: Knitted in the round from the bottom up to the armhole shaping
- Front panel: Braiding is worked continuously while simultaneously carving out the V-shaped neckline for seamless integration of stitch patterns
- Back panel: Worked in stockinette stitch for a clean, understated contrast to the textured front
- Joining method: Front and back panels are joined using the 3-needle binding-off technique for a secure, professional seam
- Armscye shaping: The asymmetrical "false hem" armscye detail is created by picking up stitches around the armhole opening and combining different ribbing patterns with short-row shaping for dimensional edge definition
Stitches Used
The SnowHeart vest incorporates multiple stitch techniques to achieve its sophisticated appearance. Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of the back panel and body, providing a smooth, classic base. Braids feature prominently on the front, adding textural interest and visual movement. Ribbing variations are utilized in the armscye shaping, while the V-shaped neckline employs textured stitchwork to frame the garment opening. The combination of these stitch patterns creates depth and visual hierarchy throughout the design.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
SnowHeart is designed for aran and worsted weight yarns, offering versatility in fiber choice while maintaining consistent drape and structure. The pattern accommodates the range of these yarn weights to achieve the intended close-fitting silhouette and braid definition. Circular needles are required for the bottom-up in-the-round construction, with straight needles or additional circulars needed for the flat sections of the front and back panels. The 3-needle binding-off technique requires appropriate needle sizing for joining the final seam.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, SnowHeart is suitable for knitters with solid foundational skills. The pattern requires proficiency with in-the-round knitting, cable or braid techniques, short-row shaping, and the 3-needle bind-off method. The asymmetrical armscye construction and simultaneous neckline shaping while braiding demand attention to detail and pattern reading ability, making this an engaging project for experienced knitters ready to expand their technical repertoire.
