Product Description
A lovely six-pointed snowflake pattern to add to your collection!
I live in Wisconsin, where it seems some years winter will never end! We may even see Snowflakes in June, although our wish would be to have them disappear months earlier.
I developed this pattern using size 10 cotton thread, but you can experiment with other sized threads, or even use yarn as gauge is not important for this pattern.
The pattern is available for FREE on my website, or you can purchase the ad-free version here or in my shop.
Snowflakes in June Crochet Pattern by Carmen Nuland
Project Overview
Snowflakes in June is a decorative crochet pattern designed by Carmen Nuland that creates a delicate six-pointed snowflake suitable for adding to your collection of handmade ornaments and decorations. This intermediate-level pattern draws inspiration from the whimsical concept of snowflakes appearing during summer months, a phenomenon that can occur even in cold climates like Wisconsin. The finished snowflake measures 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) in diameter after blocking, making it an ideal size for holiday decorations, embellishments, or display pieces.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed using size 10 cotton thread, which creates delicate, intricate details characteristic of fine crochet work. However, Carmen Nuland encourages crafters to experiment with flexibility in material selection. You can work with other sized threads or even substitute yarn of varying weights, as tension is not critical to the success of this design. This adaptability makes the pattern accessible to crocheters with different yarn stashes and preferences.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Snowflakes in June pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The stitch abbreviations used throughout the pattern include:
- ch – chain stitch, the foundation stitch for creating the base of the snowflake
- dc – double crochet, a versatile stitch used for building structure and texture
- dtr – double treble crochet, a taller stitch that creates openwork and delicate spacing
- htr – half treble crochet, a mid-height stitch that bridges the gap between shorter and taller stitches
The combination of these stitches creates the geometric six-pointed snowflake structure with appropriate negative space and dimension. The pattern's design allows for the natural formation of the snowflake's characteristic shape through strategic stitch placement and increases.
Pattern Characteristics
As an intermediate difficulty pattern, Snowflakes in June assumes familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals while introducing slightly more complex stitch combinations and shaping techniques. The emphasis on blocking after completion helps achieve the finished measurements and ensures the snowflake points are evenly distributed and properly defined. The fact that tension is not important for this design makes it forgiving and suitable for crafters still developing consistent tension control.
