Product Description

The word "smyga" is a Swedish verb that means "to sneak". This is one more in my series of sock patterns with feet related names in Swedish. The name of the pattern is in Swedish but the pattern is written in English. These easy, stretchy and textured socks are just made for sneaking in a little mini skein or two. Or a beautiful scrap you saved for something lovely. These socks are knitted top down, in the round, with a heel flap and gusset construction. The pattern is written for magic loop, but can easily be transformed to be knitted on DPN:s.

Smyga Socks by Lena Strandberg

What Is Being Made

Smyga socks are a pair of textured, stretchy socks designed for knitters looking to use up mini skeins or beautiful yarn scraps. Named after the Swedish verb meaning "to sneak," these socks are part of Lena Strandberg's series of sock patterns featuring Swedish foot-related names. The design is ideal for intermediate knitters seeking a project that combines practicality with visual interest through texture and potential color contrast.

Knitting Techniques

These socks are knitted top down and worked in the round, a popular method for sock construction that allows knitters to try on the garment as they progress. The pattern features a heel flap and gusset construction, a traditional technique that creates a reinforced heel area for durability and a comfortable fit. The pattern is primarily written for the magic loop method, a technique using a single circular needle to work small circumferences. However, the pattern can be easily adapted for knitting on double-pointed needles (DPNs), offering flexibility for knitters with different needle preferences.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the socks are described as featuring texture, suggesting the use of patterned stitches beyond basic stockinette. The textured design makes these socks visually interesting and helps them work well with variegated or contrasting yarns, allowing knitters to showcase mini skeins or special yarn scraps effectively.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

  • Yarn Weight: Fingering weight sock yarn is required to achieve proper gauge. The sample shown was knitted in size M using 60 grams (252 meters) of Irish Fairytale sock yarn for the main color and 20 grams (80 meters) of Herbstblatt Regina Gold sock yarn in fingering weight for contrast color.
  • Needles: Circular needles in sizes 2.25–2.5 mm (US 1–1.5) or the size needed to meet the pattern gauge. Knitters should select needle size based on their individual gauge rather than relying solely on needle conversion charts.
  • Yarn Weight Options: The pattern accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, providing options for different yarn bases while maintaining the fingering weight category.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, Smyga socks are suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and sock construction. The combination of top-down construction, heel flap technique, and textured patterning requires comfort with these methods, making this pattern appropriate for knitters progressing beyond beginner projects.
