This sweet little lamb is having a quick rest after a long day gambolling in the sunshine. To make an extra fluffy cuddly toy, the body is knitted in a soft fleecy boucle yarn in knitted loops. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the sheep is knitted on single pointed needles (not in the round). For advanced beginners and above, techniques used include casting on and off, knit, purl, knitting loops, increases and decreases, and seaming.
The Sleepy Sheep is a charming knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This soft, cuddly stuffed animal features a distinctive textured body created using bouclé yarn, paired with a smoother head and legs. The finished toy is suitable for children and makes an excellent handmade gift or decorative piece.
This project is created entirely through knitting, making it an ideal intermediate-level knitting pattern. The design showcases two different knitting techniques to achieve contrasting textures: traditional flat knitting for the head and legs, and loop knitting for the body. Loop knitting is a specialized technique that creates raised, fluffy loops in the fabric, giving the sheep its characteristic soft, fleece-like appearance. This textural contrast between the smooth head and legs and the looped body is central to the toy's visual appeal and tactile quality.
Yarn: The pattern uses two distinct yarn types in DK weight (double knitting, light worsted weight, 8 ply). The head and legs are knitted in 100% acrylic DK yarn in Light Brown, chosen for its smooth texture and durability. The body is created using 100% polyester DK bouclé yarn in Cream, a fluffy, fleecy yarn that provides the signature textured appearance. The original pattern specified discontinued yarns, but Amanda Berry recommends substituting Hayfield Bonus DK for the head and legs, and Sirdar Snuggly Bunny DK for the body.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires a pair of 3.75mm (US 5) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm. Additional materials include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, several handfuls of toy filling to stuff the completed toy, black embroidery thread or floss for adding facial details, and a tape measure or ruler for checking gauge and measurements.
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. While basic knitting skills are essential, the inclusion of loop knitting technique adds a moderate challenge that allows crafters to expand their skill set. The pattern includes helpful references and tutorials to guide knitters through the specialized techniques required.
