Product Description

With a baby on the way I wanted to make some warm jumpers for keeping him snug when out and about. This jumper has a sleeping cat picture on the front which is worked in intarsia from a chart.

The jumper is knitted in DK yarn using 3.75mm and 4mm needles. It is worked flat and seamed. The neck is worked with a super stretchy cast off to ensure it can easily be pulled over the babies head without needing buttons.

Sleeping Cat Baby Jumper Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Sleeping Cat Baby Jumper is a charming knitted sweater designed for infants ranging from newborn to 18 months old. This pattern by designer Helen Auld offers four graduated sizes to accommodate babies as they grow: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months. The jumper features an actual chest measurement range from 40.5 cm (16 inches) in the smallest size to 48 cm (19 inches) in the largest size, with corresponding length measurements from 25.5 cm (10 inches) to 34.5 cm (13½ inches). Sleeve lengths progress from 17 cm (7 inches) to 24 cm (10 inches) across the size range.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental garment construction techniques suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern utilizes increases and decreases to shape the garment pieces, creating proper fit and shaping for a baby sweater. Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knitted surface. The pattern requires working with multiple yarn colors to create the sleeping cat design detail, introducing colorwork elements into the construction process.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The Sleeping Cat Baby Jumper uses essential knitting stitches throughout its construction:

  • Knit (K): The fundamental knit stitch forms the basis of the fabric
  • Purl (P): Purl stitches are worked on wrong-side rows to create stocking stitch
  • Stocking Stitch (st st): The primary fabric structure, created by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows to produce a smooth, uniform surface
  • Increase (Inc): Created by knitting or purling into the front and back of the next stitch to add stitches for shaping
  • Decrease (Dec): Accomplished by knitting or purling 2 stitches together to reduce stitch count

Yarn and Materials

The Sleeping Cat Baby Jumper pattern calls for DK weight yarn across all four sizes, requiring a total of 5 balls of yarn per garment. The color palette includes four distinct yarn shades:

  • Yarn A: Sirdar Snuggly DK in Lilac (shade 219) – 2 balls for all sizes
  • Yarn B: King Cole Pricewise DK in Taupe (shade 037) – 1 ball for all sizes
  • Yarn C: King Cole Pricewise DK in Khaki (shade 1742) – 1 ball for all sizes
  • Yarn D: King Cole Pricewise DK in Black (shade 048) – 1 ball for all sizes

The pattern requires two sets of needles: Size 3¾ mm needles and Size 4 mm needles, allowing for gauge adjustments and ribbing variations if desired. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for finishing.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 10 cm x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches) in stocking stitch. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches this specification, as variations will affect the finished garment size and fit for the baby.
