Slavyanka Sweater by Lyudmila Aksenik

What Is Being Made

The Slavyanka sweater is a knitted pullover jumper designed by Lyudmila Aksenik. This garment is available in multiple sizes ranging from children's sizes 3-4 years through adult 2XL, with 3 inches of positive ease built into the fit. The sweater features a classic construction with ribbed neckline and cuffs, a fitted body, and decorative fair isle patterning.

Knitting Techniques Used

This design employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The sweater is constructed using circular knitting throughout, allowing for seamless construction on the body and sleeves. The pattern incorporates ribbed knit sections at the neckline and cuffs for elasticity and a finished appearance. A key feature of the Slavyanka sweater is the inclusion of fair isle colorwork, a traditional technique involving the stranding of two colors of yarn across rows to create intricate geometric or pictorial patterns. The fair isle section is worked at a slightly larger gauge than the body ribbing, requiring a needle size adjustment to accommodate the pattern's density.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate to its beginner difficulty level. Ribbed knit sections—typically combinations of knit and purl stitches worked in alternating columns—form the neckline, cuffs, and waistband areas. The body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, flat fabric. The fair isle colorwork section introduces stranded knitting, where two colors are carried across the back of the work and floated between stitches to create the pattern. This technique requires careful tension management to ensure even fabric and prevent overly tight floats that could pucker the garment.

Yarn and Materials

The Slavyanka sweater pattern calls for 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn with a yardage of 459 yards per 100 grams. The recommended yarn is Nardi Filati S.p.a Minotaur, which is composed of 80% wool and 20% manufactured fibers (nylon/polyamide blend). Substitutions are permitted using any wool or tweed yarn with similar yardage and weight specifications. The pattern requires US 3 (3 mm) circular knitting needles measuring 10-12 inches for the neckline and cuff ribbing, US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles measuring 24-32 inches for the main body construction, and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches for the fair isle colorwork section. Additional materials include knitting markers for tracking pattern repeats, a row counter for monitoring progress, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming if necessary.

Gauge and Finishing

Achieving the correct gauge is critical for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 34 rows per 4 inches when measured over stockinette stitch after blocking. Knitters are advised to adjust needle sizes if their gauge differs from this specification, as even small variations can significantly affect the final dimensions of the garment. Blocking after completion helps set the stitches and achieve the intended measurements and drape.
