Product Description
Just in time for holiday knitting!
Stranded fair isle is one of the most revered traditions in knitting. If, like many knitters, you shrink at the thought of carrying all those colors of yarn (oh, the tangling!) and the need for perfect floats (hello, puckering!), I see you. Finally, here is a pattern for two different faux fair isle hats made using just one color per row! No magic spells required.
The pattern includes instructions for two different colorwork patterns.
Special kits are available while supplies last. Go here.
Each kit has enough superwash wool yarn to make 3 hats!

Skadan Hat by Melissa Leapman
What is Being Made
Skadan is a knitted hat designed by Melissa Leapman, available in two finished sizes: Small/Medium with a circumference of 20 ½" and height of 8 ½", and Large/1X with a circumference of 23 ½" and height of 9 ½". This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat suitable for a range of head sizes, with detailed shaping instructions for the crown and body of the garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Skadan hat employs several essential knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction begins with circular knitting using a 16" circular needle, transitioning to double-pointed needles as the crown shaping progresses and stitch counts decrease. The pattern incorporates charted colorwork, with knitters working through Chart 1 twice across the body of the hat before completing the remainder in a single color. Crown shaping is achieved through strategic decreases, including knit-two-together (k2tog) reductions spaced evenly around the hat to create the proper tapering at the top.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit stitches worked in the round and knit-two-together (k2tog) decreases for shaping the crown. The design incorporates charted colorwork patterns that require reading and following a knitting chart while maintaining consistent tension across color changes. Stitch counts progress from 96 (112) stitches in the smaller (larger) size and decrease to 84 (98) stitches after the first decrease round, with further reductions continuing through the crown shaping process.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Skadan is designed to be worked in Universal Yarns' Deluxe Worsted Superwash, a worsted weight yarn with yardage of 218 yards per 100-gram ball. The pattern calls for four colors: Ginseng #707 (A), Shamrock Heather #754 (B), Terra Cotta #703 (C), and Spice Rustic #768 (D), with one ball of each color required. A notable feature of this design is its efficiency—the four balls of yarn provided are sufficient to knit three complete hats, making it an economical project for crafters interested in producing multiple garments.
Needles required include a 16" circular knitting needle in size 7 (4.5 mm) or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge, along with one set of double-pointed knitting needles of the same size for working the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for circular needle work. Melissa Leapman offers special yarn kits for this pattern while supplies last through her website.
