Product Description
The Simple Ribbed Hat is just that, a classic ribbed hat suitable for men and women. Given the elastic nature of ribbing, the hat will fit most heads from young adult through large adult.
The hat can be worn with the brim folded up and slouchy.

What is Being Made
The Simple Ribbed Hat is a classic knitted beanie designed to fit most head sizes at 21 inches in circumference. This project creates a comfortable, everyday hat using straightforward knitting techniques suitable for those with advanced beginner skills. The finished hat features a clean ribbed texture throughout, providing both visual interest and practical stretch and recovery in the fabric.
Techniques Used
This hat is constructed using fundamental circular knitting methods. The project begins with casting on stitches using circular needles and joining in the round, which creates a seamless tube of fabric. The main body is worked continuously in the round using the k2p2 ribbing pattern, a classic alternating knit and purl stitch that creates vertical lines and natural elasticity. Once the hat reaches the desired length, the crown is shaped through strategic decreases. The pattern instructs knitters to transition from circular needles to double-pointed needles when the circumference becomes too small to work comfortably on the circular needle, a standard technique for closing the crown of a hat.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental stitch that forms the basis of the ribbed pattern
- Purl (p): Used in alternation with knit stitches to create the k2p2 ribbing
- K2p2 ribbing: A repeating pattern of knitting 2 stitches followed by purling 2 stitches, creating vertical columns that provide elasticity and visual texture
- Purl 2 together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used during the crown shaping to gradually reduce stitches and close the top of the hat
Materials
The Simple Ribbed Hat requires 175 yards of worsted weight yarn, making it an efficient project that uses minimal yardage. The sample hat shown in the pattern was knit using S. Charles Linden Yarn, a luxurious 100% cashmere blend requiring 2 skeins. Knitters will need #7 circular needles measuring 16 inches for the main body and #7 double-pointed needles for the crown shaping. Additional notions include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and the beginning of each round, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches over 4 inches when measured in k2p2 ribbing in the unstretched state, ensuring proper fit and finished dimensions.
