Product Description

I love making towels with dish cotton. They are so absorbent and durable, but I was tired of towels falling off the oven handle onto the floor. I needed a set with loops to hang on my cabinet … so ta-da the Simple Lines Towel.

The pattern uses basic stitches in a simple pattern repeat. It’s great for beginners and makes great TV knitting. The added purl line to an otherwise simple stockinette project provides additional interest.

Simple Lines Towel by NichKnit Designs

Project Overview

The Simple Lines Towel is a beginner-friendly knitted dishcloth designed by NichKnit Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a functional kitchen towel with a practical hanging loop, measuring 14 inches by 17 inches when finished. The design solves a common kitchen problem by incorporating a secure loop for cabinet or oven handle hanging, preventing towels from slipping onto the floor.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a practical dishcloth and kitchen towel with an integrated loop feature for hanging storage. The finished towel is sized at 14 inches by 17 inches, making it an ideal size for drying dishes, wiping counters, and general kitchen use. The addition of the hanging loop distinguishes this design from standard flat dishcloths, providing both functionality and convenience for kitchen organization.

Craft and Techniques

Simple Lines Towel is created using the knitting craft. The pattern is specifically designed for beginner knitters, making it an excellent first project or casual knitting suitable for television watching. The construction method is straightforward, allowing crafters to build confidence with fundamental knitting techniques while producing a useful finished item.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K) – The primary stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch (P) – Used to create decorative purl lines that add visual interest to the otherwise simple stockinette pattern
  • Knit two together (K2tog) – A decrease stitch for shaping
  • Cast on – Initial stitch setup using long tail or preferred cast on method with 60 stitches
  • Bind off (BO) – Final stitch closure

The pattern features a simple pattern repeat combining stockinette stitch with strategic purl lines. Rows 1 through 8 begin with garter stitch (knitting every row), followed by the introduction of the patterned section beginning at Row 9. This basic stitch combination creates a textured, visually interesting towel while remaining manageable for beginners.

Materials

Yarn: Lily Sugar 'n Cream in worsted weight, a dish cotton specifically chosen for absorbency and durability. The pattern requires either 1 Super Size skein or 2 regular skeins, totaling 200 yards and 113 grams of yarn. Dish cotton is ideal for kitchen textiles due to its superior absorbent properties and long-lasting wear through repeated washing and use.

Needles: US Size 7 (4.5 mm) needles are required for this project. This needle size works with the worsted weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge.

Notions: A darning needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends upon completion of the project.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured over stockinette stitch. Maintaining proper gauge ensures the finished towel reaches the intended dimensions of 14 inches by 17 inches. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 60 stitches, providing the width foundation for the completed piece.

Pattern Characteristics

Simple Lines Towel features a minimalist design aesthetic with clean, linear visual elements. The purl line details create subtle texture and pattern interest without requiring complex stitch techniques or frequent pattern reading. This straightforward approach makes the project ideal for knitters developing their foundational skills while producing a genuinely useful kitchen textile. The pattern's simplicity also makes it suitable for relaxed, mindless knitting during television viewing or social occasions.
