Simple Joy Ankle Socks by Kathleen Baer
What is Being Made
Simple Joy Ankle Socks is a knitted sock pattern designed by Kathleen Baer. The pattern is versatile and can be customized beyond the ankle length—knitters can extend the leg to any desired length. The design is available in both a top-down construction method and an alternative toe-up version, offering flexibility for different knitting preferences and techniques.
Construction Method
The primary instructions use a top-down construction, worked in the round using either two circular needles or the magic loop technique. This approach begins at the cuff and progresses downward to the toe. A toe-up version is also included in the pattern for knitters who prefer to start from the toe and work toward the cuff.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for sock construction:
- Stockinette stitch in the round forms the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic sock appearance
- Cast on techniques to establish stitches at the cuff
- Knit and purl stitches as foundational stitch elements
- Knit front and back (KFB) for increases during shaping
- Knit two stitches together (K2tog) and purl two stitches together (P2tog) for decreases
- Slip stitches with yarn positioning (slip 1 purl-wise with yarn in back and slip 1 purl-wise with yarn in front) for edge definition and stitch management
Materials and Gauge
Simple Joy Ankle Socks requires 230 to 310 yards of fingering weight yarn (4-ply), with yardage varying based on the chosen size and custom leg length. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using Humble Acres yarn in the Cat's Meow colorway. Knitters work with US 1/2.25mm needles or whichever needle size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 9 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Proper gauge checking is emphasized as essential for proper fit.
Skill Level
Classified as a beginner difficulty pattern, Simple Joy Ankle Socks is accessible to knitters new to sock construction while using classic sock-making techniques and straightforward shaping methods.
