The Silver Mountain Pullover is an easy-to-knit sweater designed by Therese Chynoweth. This pullover is crafted as a classic crewneck sweater available in seven sizes ranging from X-Small to 3X, with bust measurements from 31½ inches (80 cm) to 56 inches (142 cm) and finished lengths between 23½ inches (59.5 cm) and 26½ inches (67.5 cm). The sample garment shown is size Small.
This pullover is constructed using bottom-up construction, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the neckline. The design features stripes as a primary design element, adding visual interest and color variation to the finished piece. The sweater is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous knitting without the need to seam pieces together later. This technique is particularly beginner-friendly as it eliminates the complexity of joining multiple flat pieces.
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is Stockinette stitch, which is the most fundamental and versatile stitch in knitting. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, uniform fabric with a characteristic V-pattern on the right side and horizontal bumps on the wrong side. The pattern requires a gauge of 19 stitches and 25 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in Stockinette stitch, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished garment.
The Silver Mountain Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns CLASSIC SUPERWASH, a 100% superwash wool yarn. This yarn is offered in three colors for the striped design: ash (color #02) for the primary color, aquamarine (color #16) for accent stripes, and charcoal (color #04) for additional color blocking. Each hank contains 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and yields 218 yards (199 meters). The yardage requirements vary by size, with smaller sizes requiring 2 hanks of ash and 1 hank each of aquamarine and charcoal, while larger sizes (2X and 3X) require 3 hanks of ash and 4 hanks of charcoal.
This pattern requires US 6 (4mm) circular needles in three different lengths: 16 inches (40 cm), 24 inches (60 cm), and 32 inches (80 cm). These multiple needle lengths accommodate different stages of the sweater construction, from the ribbed cuffs and waistband to the larger body sections and yoke. Additionally, one set of US 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles is needed for working small circumferences, particularly at the neckline. Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sweater construction. The straightforward bottom-up, in-the-round methodology combined with the simplicity of Stockinette stitch creates an accessible project that teaches fundamental sweater-making skills without overwhelming complexity.
