Craft and Difficulty Level
This is a knitting project rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction. The pattern introduces fundamental shawl-building techniques without overwhelming complexity, allowing beginners to develop core skills while creating a beautiful finished garment.
Knitting Techniques
The Silke shawl employs several essential knitting techniques:
- Cable Cast-On — the recommended cast-on method for this pattern, particularly useful for creating decorative picots along the shawl edge
- Eyelet Ridge construction — a stitch pattern featured in the design that creates texture and visual interest
- Increases — including the kfb (knit front and back) increase technique to shape the triangular silhouette
- Garter stitch — the primary stitch used throughout, known for its reversible, textured appearance and beginner-friendly execution
- Wet blocking — finishing technique applied after knitting to set the gauge and shape
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes straightforward stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit stitch (k) — the foundation stitch worked throughout
- Knit through the back loop (tbl) — creates a twisted stitch variation for visual texture
- Knit front and back (kfb) — an increase method that adds stitches for shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) — a decrease technique for shaping
- Garter stitch — created by knitting every row, producing the characteristic bumpy texture
Materials and Yarn
The Silke shawl is designed to use 1 skein of fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies WalkCollection Silky BFL Fingering (55% wool, 45% silk blend; 400 meters/437 yards per 100 grams) in the colorway Moana as shown in the example. However, the pattern is adaptable to any fingering weight yarn that achieves the correct gauge, offering flexibility for substituting alternative yarns based on personal preference, availability, or budget.
Needles and Tools
The project requires:
- 3.75 mm (US #5) circular needle — 80 cm (32 inches) long, sized to achieve proper gauge in garter stitch
- 4 stitch markers — used to track pattern sections and shaping points
- Tapestry needle — for weaving in yarn ends during finishing
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 34 rows equals 10 cm (4 inches) in garter stitch, measured flat after wet blocking. While the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial for this project, variations in gauge will directly affect the finished size and the total yardage required, making it important to swatch and measure before beginning if you are substituting yarn.
Pattern Summary
Silke is an ideal beginner shawl pattern that teaches fundamental knitting techniques through a simple, elegant design. The triangular shape is achieved through strategic increases worked across rows, while the garter stitch base provides a forgiving, meditative knitting experience. The incorporation of eyelet ridges and the cable cast-on method add visual interest and introduce techniques that build foundational skills. With only one skein of fingering weight yarn required, this project is accessible and economical, making it perfect for knitters exploring shawl patterns for the first time.
