DK version: 2 or 3 colours of DK/Worsted yarn (up to 102g in total). Needle Size: 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles.
Tools: 1 spare needle of similar or larger size for a 3-needle bind-off; Crochet hook for a provisional cast on (optional); waste yarn; yarn needle and measuring tape.
The pattern contains step by step instructions, support pictures and links to video technique help sites.

What is Being Made
The ShortStuff is a fun and fashionable slouchy beanie designed for knitters seeking a relaxed, comfortable hat with visual interest. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a hat that drapes elegantly with a slouchy silhouette, perfect for casual everyday wear. The beanie is shown in 4ply weight yarn with multiple color options, allowing crafters to customize their finished hat with 2 or more colors for a personalized look.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add depth and dimension to the finished garment:
- Sideways Construction: The beanie is knitted sideways, meaning the fabric grows horizontally rather than from the crown downward, creating a unique construction method that influences how the stripes are formed.
- Short Row Stripes: A series of short row stripes run left and right across the fabric, creating the distinctive striped pattern. This technique involves turning the work before completing a full row, building color and texture strategically.
- German Short Rows: The pattern specifically calls for knowledge of German short rows, an advanced short row technique that creates clean, nearly invisible wraps for a polished finish.
- Provisional Cast On: The pattern uses a provisional cast on method, which allows stitches to be picked up later. A crochet hook and waste yarn are used for this technique, enabling the 3-needle bind off closure.
- 3-Needle Bind Off: This joining technique is used to bind off and seam simultaneously, creating a secure and neat closure where two sets of live stitches meet.
Stitches Used
Garter Stitch is the sole stitch pattern used throughout the entire beanie. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing horizontal ridges on both sides of the fabric. This classic, reversible stitch provides excellent texture, structure, and drape—ideal for a slouchy beanie. The gauge for this pattern is 21 stitches by 42 rows (21 garter ridge rows) over a 4-inch (10 centimeter) square, measured on unblocked fabric.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern accommodates two yarn weight versions—DK weight or 4ply weight—allowing knitters to choose based on preference and availability. For the DK weight version, knitters need 1 skein each of two or more colors (C1, C2, or C3). The suggested yarn is The Plucky Knitter Primo DK, which features a luxurious blend of 75% Merino, 20% Cashmere, and 5% Nylon, with each 100-gram skein containing 200 yards of yardage.
Needles and Tools: The DK weight version requires 4mm (US size 6) circular needles, 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer, plus one spare needle of similar or larger size for the 3-needle bind off. Additional tools include a crochet hook (optional, for provisional cast on), waste yarn for the provisional cast on, a yarn needle for sewing up and weaving in ends, a measuring tape, and 1 stitch marker.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The combination of short rows, provisional cast ons, and the sideways construction method requires solid foundational skills and comfort with more advanced techniques. However, the straightforward garter stitch pattern keeps the actual knitting process accessible, with the complexity residing primarily in the construction method and shaping techniques.
