Product Description
This pattern was initially inspired by fiber given to me by my aunt, who owns an alpaca farm (Sun-Spiced Alpacas in central Florida, for anyone interested in tracking down this fiber. The alpaca's name is Tiffany). It was long staple suri alpaca of surpassing quality, with a softness and smooth luster more like silk than most commercially available alpaca yarn. In fact, given the color and silky smoothness, it looked to me like the long white blond hair of Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings than anything else.
Therefore this cowl is made to be the sort of thing Éowyn would wear. The stitch pattern is both bold and feminine, incorporating lace-work through a cable pattern and with a subtle ruffled edge. I also think a cowl is obviously the most practical neck-wear for a warrior. It is very warm and insulating, but has no tails that could be caught in mail or pulled by an opponent and is also very yarn-efficient.

Shieldmaiden Cowl by Varina Jones
Project Overview
The Shieldmaiden is a knitted cowl designed by independent designer Varina Jones, inspired by long staple suri alpaca fiber from her aunt's alpaca farm. The pattern draws aesthetic inspiration from Éowyn, the warrior character from literature, combining practical neck-wear functionality with elegant design elements suitable for both everyday wear and fantasy-themed projects.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl—a tubular neck accessory that provides warmth and insulation without the practical drawbacks of traditional scarves. The designer specifically notes that a cowl is ideal neck-wear for a warrior, as it offers superior warmth while eliminating loose tails that could be caught in armor or grabbed by an opponent. The finished piece balances both bold and feminine aesthetic qualities.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details
The Shieldmaiden features a unique stitch pattern that combines multiple advanced knitting techniques:
- Cable work—bold structural elements that form the foundation of the design
- Lace-work—delicate openwork integrated throughout the cable pattern for visual interest and texture contrast
- Ruffled edge—a subtle decorative finish that adds feminine detail to the finished cowl
This intermediate-level pattern is best suited to knitters already experienced with both lace and cable techniques, as it requires comfort managing yarn overs, decreases, and cable crosses simultaneously.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern was originally created using handspun long staple suri alpaca yarn, prized for its exceptional softness, smooth luster, and silk-like qualities. For knitting this pattern, worsted weight yarn is specified. The designer notes that the yarn's characteristics—particularly its long staple length and lustrous finish—contribute significantly to the final appearance of the stitch pattern and the cowl's drape.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes prior knitting experience with advanced stitch techniques. Knitters should be comfortable reading complex stitch patterns, managing cable stitches, and working lace sections before beginning this project.
