Product Description
[Sherlock's Great Afghan Adventure][1] is a year long mystery read and knit-along which features a new afghan motif each month inspired by a one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous short stories. Beginning March 15, 2014 there will be all sorts of twists and turns to delight the mystery lover and knitter in you. Suitable for adventurous beginners to intermediate fiber warriors alike - with a whole community of friends to answer questions and cheer you on along the way.
The pattern is knit flat and will have 12 separate squares that you will seam together then apply a border once assembled. The directions for each square are written and charted. Gauge is not critical to this project - if you want to make it in a different weight yarn and needle size by all means do so - just be consistent with your gauge throughout the entire project.
Solid, semi-solid or shaded colorways are recommended for this project. Mine will be one color but feel free to mix it up - several of the square
Sherlock's Great Adventure Afghan - Mystery KAL by Susan Woodley
Project Overview
Sherlock's Great Afghan Adventure is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed as a mystery knit-along (KAL) that creates a blanket or throw inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes stories. This downloadable PDF pattern guides knitters through a multi-square afghan project, with the first square titled Lauriston Gardens, drawing inspiration from the setting in A Study in Scarlet where Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson first meet and begin their detective partnership.
Design Inspiration and Symbolism
The pattern weaves literary themes throughout its construction. Lauriston Gardens, specifically house Number 3, serves as the crime scene location that introduces Sherlock's investigative methods in the original novel. The designer, Susan Woodley, has incorporated this historical setting into the knitted design through deliberate stitch choices that reflect the story's foundation and structure.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Garter Stitch: Forms the background of the design, creating a textured foundation that resembles layers of brickwork. This stitch choice symbolizes the foundational layers upon which all Sherlock Holmes stories are built.
- Traveling Twist Stitches: Columns of traveling twist stitches create visual interest and represent the intertwining plot lines and characters that appear throughout the Sherlock Holmes stories, showing how characters and narrative threads come and go throughout the series.
Materials and Yardage Requirements
The complete afghan project requires 2400 yards of worsted weight yarn total. For knitters working individual squares in different colors, each square uses approximately 300 grams of yarn. The pattern is designed so that leftover yarn from each completed square can be incorporated into the border, minimizing waste and creating a cohesive final piece.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with complex stitch patterns, managing multiple color changes across squares, and executing traveling stitches with precision.
Project Format
Sherlock's Great Afghan Adventure is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access the pattern immediately and work through the mystery KAL at their own pace, completing each square as new pattern installments are released.
