Product Description
This beautiful cape is made in a layered shell pattern. It is crocheted seamlessly top-down. The cowl is added at last - and the cape is also beautiful without the cowl.
I made it using 2 threads of an alpaca yarn, but you can substitute for 1 thread if you prefer. For example using a wool yarn with a yardage around 120-140 m/50 g.
Sizes: S (M) L (1X) 2X. The shown cape is size M

Shell Cape by Sidsel Sangild
What is Being Made
The Shell Cape is a crocheted garment designed by Sidsel Sangild that features a distinctive shell stitch pattern. This cape is available in five sizes: S, M, L, 1X, and 2X, with finished circumferences ranging from 108 cm to 138 cm. The design offers versatility for different body sizes and can be customized in length to suit individual preferences.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental crochet techniques combined with decorative shell stitching. The pattern is worked in rows and features repeating shell motifs that create an elegant, textured appearance. The gauge is critical for this design, with 2 pattern repeats measuring 12 cm in width. Crafters are instructed to work a gauge swatch before beginning the main project to ensure proper sizing and fit. The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout.
Stitches Used
The Shell Cape incorporates single crochet (sc) and shell stitches as its primary stitch elements. The pattern repeats consist of shells alternated with single crochet stitches, creating a rhythmic, textured fabric. The gauge swatch begins with a chain foundation and single crochet in the second chain from the hook, establishing the base for the shell pattern rows that follow.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Drops alpaca yarn in colour 2923, with yardage requirements of 6 (6) 8 (8) 10 skeins depending on size, based on 167 m per 50 g skein. The designer notes that the yarn is worked with 2 threads held together for the main cape. For crafters preferring to use a single thread, a wool yarn substitute with a yardage of 120–140 m per 50 g is suggested as an alternative. A 4.5 mm crochet hook is recommended, though a slightly smaller hook may be used for the cowl portion if desired. After completing the gauge swatch, it should be washed and dried flat to ensure accurate measurements before proceeding with the full project.
