Product Description

This scarf/cowl was designed and inspired by the incredibly gorgeous fingering weight yarn I purchased from Yarn Baby LLC. I did not have a pattern in mind when I purchased it. Instead the stitches came to me with hook in hand. This cowl truly designed itself.

This scarf/cowl is incredibly versatile in that it can be made with any yarn and hook you have on hand. The fingering weight yarn and H hook aren’t usually paired together, but in this case it allows a beautifully light and airy stitch and gives this piece incredible drape.

Although the pattern was written using the Fingering weight yarn and an H hook, it has been tested with #4 worsted weight and #6 chunky weight with amazing results! Measurements and suggestions are listed in the pattern.

All of my patterns have been tested by several accomplished pattern testers and designers to ensure that you are getting a pattern free of mistakes and is easy to follow.

Shannon Scarf by Sincerely Pam

Project Overview

The Shannon Scarf is an intermediate-level crochet design that functions as both a scarf and cowl, created by designer Sincerely Pam. This versatile accessory was organically designed using fingering weight yarn as the primary inspiration, with stitches developed intuitively during the creative process rather than from a pre-existing pattern concept. The finished piece showcases how quality yarn selection can drive pattern development and result in a beautifully textured, wearable garment.

What Is Being Made

The Shannon Scarf is a dual-purpose accessory that can be worn as either a traditional scarf or styled as a cowl. This flexibility makes it a practical addition to any crocheter's wardrobe, suitable for various styling preferences and seasonal needs. The design's organic development process resulted in a piece that highlights the natural beauty of fingering weight yarn.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate crochet project utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined in a way that creates visual interest and texture. The pattern employs the following stitches:

  • Single Crochet (sc): A basic, tight stitch that forms the foundation of many crochet projects
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch that provides structure while remaining relatively lightweight
  • Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch that adds drape and openness to the fabric
  • Chain (ch): The foundational stitch used to create the base and spaces throughout the pattern
  • Slip Stitch (slst): Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
  • Skip (sk): Technique for creating intentional gaps and stitch spacing

The combination of these stitches creates a balanced fabric with appropriate drape and structure for a scarf or cowl application.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The Shannon Scarf pattern is designed for #1 Fingering Weight Yarn, which is a delicate, thin yarn weight ideal for creating detailed stitch definition and elegant drape. The pattern notes indicate that alternative yarn weights are available for crafters who prefer different finished dimensions.

Hook: The primary hook size recommended is an H hook (5mm), which pairs appropriately with fingering weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge and fabric density.

Sizing and Gauge Options

The Shannon Scarf pattern provides flexibility through multiple yarn weight and hook size combinations, allowing crafters to customize the finished dimensions:

  • #1 Fingering Yarn with H hook (5mm): Approximately 25 inches wide by 13.5 inches tall
  • #4 Medium Weight Yarn with K hook (6.5mm): Approximately 30 inches wide by 15 inches tall
  • #6 Super Bulky Yarn with Q hook (16mm): Approximately 74 inches wide by 16 inches tall

The pattern specifies a gauge of 3 single crochet stitches equal 1 inch when worked with the recommended yarn and hook combination. Crafters are advised that actual measurements may vary slightly based on individual tension and yarn characteristics.

Pattern Format and Licensing

The Shannon Scarf is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate crocheters. The designer, Sincerely Pam, retains copyright protection over the pattern itself and all associated photography. Crafters are permitted to create and sell finished items made from this pattern, but may not share, copy, or reproduce the pattern in any form. Those selling finished Shannon Scarves online are requested to link back to the designer's shops as a courtesy.
